Hi all, thanks again for your suggestions. I had a look at cinnabar on google images, after Rics suggestion and I am pretty sure that is what it is. I think I should now handle the stuff with a lot more respect, not crush it up and not burn it I have taken some photos (not good quality) of the rocks I broke off yesterday and they show the veining and red staining, and the grey cinnabar. The photos really dont justify the brilliant colour of the rock. The red paint-like material that I was seeing when I scrubbed the material was vermillion (or so I read.) What I am not sure of is whether gold or silver can be carried along with this stuff - will still get it assayed to see what it comes up with. Mystery solved I think, thanks everyone. Will come back with results when I have them from the analysis. Regards,

Cinnabar not Galena Lead, ( Cinnabar) as I have seen was at Windeyer near Mudgee. Anyway lets run on Stacks advice. It could have been a leader to the main deposit. It might not have been worthwhile. To me it would have been an experience to have found it. Have a look prepare the sample properly. donny Hi Donny You might be onto something there 'Galena Lead' I had a bit of a search and found this www.smecrusher.com/solution/lead-ore-crusher/which sure looks a bit like the first couple of pics in vcubitts post Ric

Red Jaspers are good for gold especially when at the contact zone with Greenstone (metamorphosed granites)
