I am beginning to feel that gold prospecting and I simply don't go together. Went out yesterday to a new area near majors Creek, got a gram and bit of gold and blew the motor in my truck on the way home. Some place way back in the distant past that I have completely forgot about, I must have killed a Chinaman. Gold prospecting has cost me 2 trucks in the last 3 years, time to give up and become a couch potato.

Awww mate, that's no good. Any idea what caused it, apart from getting some gold.
**that reminds me, I need to do an oil change on the wagon

Gee mate thats no good. You'll need more than a gram and a bit it fix the motor. I can remember when you wrote of your last truck. You may have to go up to the goldfields and just stay there. Bad luck though about the motor. Do you think it can be fixed or just chuck it away and get a new (reco)motor. nugget893

Hi Bill.
Prices in this lovely country of ours are ridiculous. Exchange motor from Land rover parts in Adelaide - $12,000, short motor from Sydney - almost $7,000, rebuild my motor in Canberra - $4500. None of them are worth it. I am going to have a look at what I can do myself, I rebuilt my old Rangie motor many years ago, might try and do this one as well.

What caused it to die Jeff?
What about a second hander and just drop it in?

Hi Ric.
It dumped an full radiator of water in under 5 minutes, out the exhaust and into the sump. Major head gasket failure and I didn't notice the symptoms. Temp gauge never moved until I actually stopped, by then the motor was cooked. I haven't been able to find a good condition 2nd hand motor yet. The reconditioned ones are way too expensive.

I can sympathize with you Jeff,a similar thing happened to me. I have had a bad run with my 80 series lately. I did an in chassis rebuild after bending a con rod and then changed the head gasket twice after the rebuild before getting it to seal properly. I fitted a brand new Toyota head as part of the rebuild. I was driving down to Braidwood one night after work and blew a top radiator hose on the highway, didn't see the gauge rising and wrecked the new head and eroded the top of the block. Had to pull the engine out, disassemble it again and get the block decked, machine the top of pistons and put another new head on. $1800.00 each. Seems like all I have been doing for the last few months is working on bloody cars. Time and cash poor at the moment but at least it's back on the road again. I'm thinking about wiring in a big red temp light like the old cars used to have when they had no gauge. Hope you can find another engine at a decent price, PM sent.

Ouch, Jeff i remember the first one and the roo. The blown gasket is it your Hilux? what a bugger. My water pump did that to me in my Rav but caught it in time before it started heating up. mechanic replaced the pump and the timing belt for $400. no engine damage. Did you try wreckers?
