Hi DJ.
Wow, what a nice part of the world. Been over most of Vic but never down there.
Good luck in Bear gully, lets us know how you go.

Interested to know if you have any luck at Bear's gully. My understanding is that all the gold recovered (not a lot) was in the beach sand and not in gullies. There was a rockfall at the cliffs near the kilns and it exposed a vein in the cliff face - a little was done working it but it was more gold than silver, and insignificant. There is a geological reason that the gold is probably derived from that cliff and on the rock platorms on either side of Bell Point (a particular dark rock type that hosts gold), and reconcentrated in the beach sand rather than in the gullies. Extensive prospecting up the gullies and on the plateau west of the coast reportedly yielded not a trace of gold more than metres above the beach. Some of it was swept further north by the currents towards Walkerville and reconcentrated in beach sand there. A crushing battery that was erected there was a dud for lack of any ore.
Fun,but the gold is so fine that you need a lot of colours to make a speck. Lots of places elsewhere in Gippsland with coarse gold....
