The problem with working public ground is.... its public. So unless you are camping, staying very close bye or putting a lease on the ground, there is no way to stop others coming by and having a dig. I have found a few nice spots and not had time to clean it out only to come back and find someone else has already finished it off. In the more easy to access area this is to be expected, but even if you have an out of the way spot that does not see much action it can still happen, especially with the increase in people prospecting and the decrease in land available.
It is disheartening to do a lot of testing and searching for a good run, only to find it cleaned out when you return, but you have to remember the gold does not belong to anyone till it has been dug up.

Making your work area inconspicuous when you leave can help. I rake everything over and spray the hose over it. Makes it barely noticeable, unless someones been watching you

It would be hard to know if I found a spot that I liked, and started to dig, wether or not you or any one was coming back, if the hole was half dug, I would be thinking that beauty hear is a half dug hole and not, I wonder if there coming back. I don't have the knowledge to find gold in a place where no one has ever found gold be for, so there is always signs of some one scratching around in some form. If you were already there, I would find it very hard to dig along side of you, I may have to camp near by if camp spots are limited, but I would have to fossick as far away as I could. I don't know how any one could tell it was some one else's spot, and it would not be a nice experience if some one showed up and said, Hey that is my spot, I was here last week. Like Stinkypete said, it no ones fault

Hi imdaman55.
I agree with Shivan and Ric.
Virtually impossible to keep anyone out if you are digging on public land and are not there to keep an eye on it. MOST people who know you and know where you have been digging will respect your area. At the end of your day or weekend, MOST of those you know you will at least ask if you are intending to return.
Ric has the right idea, fill your holes and rake the area over. Make it look as inconspicuous as possible. Doesn't take long to dig your hole back out when you return.
Both Shivan and I have had that done to us at Oallen. It is a very public place and nothing you can do about it, just pick another spot and start digging again.
Don't get angry, don't get down hearted, just get down and dig. Good luck with your new secret spot.
Jeff

It can be hard at times to work out if someone is still working a hole you come across at Reedy Creek, because so many day trippers visit the area. So if I find a hole in a spot I've gone to, I'll test pan a few metres away from it. That's the beauty of Reedy Creek, the gold is so prolific it's all through the ground & there's no need to try other peoples holes. Also, if people are down a track I was going to, I turn around & go to another track where nobody is or go to the other end if it's one of the bigger areas.

It's a shame when you hear of this but as it has been said by everyone else, make sure you cover your diggings....unless of course someone was watching or knew your spots. Best of luck when you go out next.....of note my Wife and I went to the Falls for a picnic and it was magical...did some off-roading and nearly got stuck in the clay...but all in all a magical place I felt so at home in the bush.
Cheers Arthur

Had this done to me about a year ago. Was in a top spot left for the week to return the following weekend missed the spot by 15 mins the bloke pulled out almost 5 grams for a really slow days digging after he pulled out the tailings I thru back in. I kept wondering if only I stayed another hour or 2 I would have hit the sweet spot

I had something simular but in reverse when fossicking for Sapphires in QLD. Stumbled upon an old guy digging in a pile of loose wash that was deposited by a back how. The old guy was about to leave after finding nothing. He did say I should dig there a while to see if there was any colour. Within 5 minutes I found a 30 carat blue / green beauty. I felt sorry for the old codger, but that's life. Flying Scott.
