G'day Joe, great video. Good to see someone getting out for a dig. Looks like you got a nice haul for an hours digging. Were you happy with how it went?

Thanks Ian, it was OK for first test run, not entirely happy to the point where it was clogging up and some Sapphires made it to the sieve. I need to take the rubber matting out next time and lift the mesh by another 1mm

You have a good setup there
I have been shot down in flames in the past for putting in my 5 cents worth. In my opinion there is way too great a volume of water going down the chute, at too great an angle Horizontal riffles would be my choice with a Green or blue synthetic under felt. Flying Scott

Do you use a mirror to pick out the sapphires Use the sieve to centralise the concentrates then flip over and pick up the heavies.

Flying Scott Thanks Scott, We tend to learn and improve constantly, I found the water was too fast yes but in saying that I have not found heavies in the bucket & sieve at the end of the sluice. The jet helps to break the soil better than spraybars. In my opinion the mesh is too long ie: not clearing the smaller stuff from underneath properly. I would like to have a drop tray at the top without any contraptions and a bigger hopper. I guess more testing.

In the mid 70's there was a bulldozer cut near a place called the boot on the Anakie sapphire fields, as it had rained that weekend the dirt had washed off the sapph's laying on the surface making them easy to see so I spent that day just walking around the cut specking, by the end of the day I had picked up a few cutters though nothing big mind you but enough to fill a tobacco tin, the lady at the shop there (at the boot) said "use a mirror to see the colour of the sapphires" and from that day to this I use a mirror.

True that, i only ever pick them if its sunny, if cloudy scoop the heavies and separate at home with good light or mirror underneath as would miss quite a few darker once on a cloudy day
