Took a friend out to Oallen today to show him what highbanking is all about. Got there around 8.30 this morning, sun was shining and all was good. Cleaned up at about 11.30 and had a surprisingly good result. Kept digging and not really taking much notice of the sky. About 1pm I got hit on the head by a drop of rain that almost killed me. Took a look at the sky in the direction of Goulburn and it was blacker than my boots. Decided that we should get out of there as quickly as possible. Well, we weren't quick enough, it began pelting down long before we finished packing up. Don't know how much rain came down, but it would have had to of been at least an 1" in 20 minutes. Drove up the bank and headed across the ford and down came the hail. Haven't seen hail that big for many many years. Golf ball and larger, cracked Graham's windscreen in his highlux and covered the road almost a foot deep. The hail kept pelting down all way to the Tarago turn off. Stopped there and had a chat with Graham and inspected the hail damage to his truck. Luckily there doesn't appear to be any damage to my truck. I hope the people that were camped at the Ford survived the hail intact and it didn't destroy their camp.
Will do a final clean up tomorrow and post some pics.

Sounds very hectic, glad you all made it back in one piece. The weather turned very quickly here also, was beautiful one minute then bucketing down the next, with a huge thunder storm.

Ooh that's lucky I was actually thinking of going myself but I looked at a few weather reports which changed my mind. Might go sometime this week. Hope the gold was good. By the way are you still able to access the left side from sydney way? Or is it under construction?

Just be very careful if you decide to venture anywhere downstream of the crossing. The entire construction site is roped off and is sign posted - "Construction Site - No Entry", although this hasn't stopped some people from driving through the red & white tape. Just be careful if you decide to do that. The Rangers and the Police have been hanging around. The Ranger was parked in the bushes yesterday for about 3 hours watching everyone and the Goulburn Police came past twice.
Finished yesterdays clean-up this arvo. Will put a couple of pics up tomorrow. Not a bad result considering we had to pack up early because of the storms.

Glad to hear you & your friend made it out safely Jeff. Shame about his windscreen though. Would not have been nice at that time if camping in a tent.

This is the results from the last couple of Saturdays. The photo's of the hail storm didn't happen, some dopey idiot forgot to put the memory card in the camera, but I won't mention any names. Last Saturday, before the storm

Gotta love gold. Never get tired of seeing it. Did you weigh it up?

Nice haul there Jeff. I think we've all done something similar. Recently I went to shoot a video & had forgotten to open the lens cover, but luckily the camera notifies you of that when you turn it on. Does the same thing if you turn it on without the memory card inserted.

Also gotta say that the gold looks super clean. What method do you use to clean it up?

Andy, I can't help being an idiot . My camera is a DSLR and also tells me if the cards is not in residence. I just didn't bother looking.
Daniel, first all the concentrate is screened to -1mm, the clean-up method depends which highbanker I am using. If it's the big one and I have 25 litres or more of concentrate, it is run through the spiral wheel first (Oallen gold being so fine, the spiral won't remove all the black sand)and then down a Miller table. If I take any of the smaller highbankers out, I can usually bypass the spiral wheel and run straight down the Miller table (after classifiying). It's a fairly slow process but cleans it extremely well.

Nice gold, though shame about the other photos. Personally I am one for putting my finger in front of the shutter.
