It's amazing what happens when you get your truck back. 3 weekends in a row digging in the dirt. AND more to come The weekend before last gave me just under 4 grams,so I decided to dig in the same area again this week, and see if it had any more to give me. Got out to Oallen fairly early (7am) and found some-one already digging in that spot. Bugger. Had a bit of a chat with them and wished them well and moved on. Went about 500/600 meters further up stream from the crossing and set-up. Enjoyed the day, got wet, moved a lot of gravel and rock and not much gold (0.2grams). Always next week

Shame your spot was taken, sounds like you were on to something. Will have to try and make it out again soon for a dig. Still waiting on the pump to be fixed

Jeffu, I'd be stoked to get a nice 4g trip out of the everyday off trip last year chasing the yellow my total for the year was 3.9g first year prospecting. And if i get a .2g clean up I swear I could make a living all the fun of the chase. Whilst on the subject of Oallen always wanted to go after hearing about it. Whats the access like do I need 4wd or could I get my old mans statsman in there? and camping situation? never actually looked up where it is but i have a feeling its going to be a good 4hr+ drive from home in south gippsland.

Hi 360.
Yep, I'd be stoked as well if every visit to Oallen yielded 4 grams. I've been going out there for 30 years and days like that are rare.
My biggest day at Oallen was about 5 years ago when I got 5.4grams but most of the time it's around the 1 gram mark. I keep going because it is close to Canberra, easy access, can get to most places without a 4X4, and there's always some gold. It's a long way from South Gippsland though; about 30-40 minutes south of Goulburn and 1.25hrs north/east of Canberra on the Shoalhaven River, plenty of camping areas. Nearest supply town would be either Goulburn or Braidwood.

I have had more days and trips away with no gold then trips with gold, but getting out and burning off some steam and unused energy and getting out of the rat race of society is most pleasurable. Thanks for the infomation that'd be a nice 6 hours drive. From memory I can make canberra in five hours taking the hume. I will have to start planning a trip. How often does the Shoalhaven flood and is there particular time of the year when its worse or prone to high waters?
