I have got some gravels from classifying cons left over from highbanking and some large interesting rocks. I was thinking of keeping them and making up a dolly pot to crush and see what I get. I will more than likely crush it all. So I'm just looking to see what I should start on. Quartz? Shale? Blue stone granite looking rock that has quartz running thru it. Also some conglomerate. Which is a mix of quartz and the blue stone granite stuff. Would any of it contain gold being that it has come from the creek and an alluvial creek at that rather than near a hard rock mine? First time doing this and trying to maximise what I have got for those summer months where I don't prospect much. Thanks

G'day mate there all a longshot so can you tell me if the quartz or shale doesn't showing any colour ,
is the blue stone a Basalt with quartz intrusions and is your conglomerate like a concrete ,
and most of all where are you in general

You never know until you throw them in the dolly pot  We have found gold in quartz, ironstone, conglomerate and rhyolite from crushing, but only ever a few specs here and there for all the effort so far, only the ironstone and conglomerate were alluvial though. If you know the gold in the creek is associated with a certain rock it can pay to have an extra look. I believe most of the rocks you have mentioned there could host gold, if it were me I would look at the quartz and ironstone first then maybe the conglomerate. All depends how keen you are and how hard the rock is to crush |

Well I brought it this far as to home. I'm going to sort stones into class meaning they look the same and see what happens.

make your dolly pot, and crush every thing in to as fine as you can, get you sluice or if not a lot, just pan it off.
Then you will know for sure there is not a sneaky piece of gold hiding in the rocks.
The worst thing that could happen is you will end up with a dolly pot, and a few mussels.

Yes as Lab said It's worth crushing every thing
also after every flood the Turon seems to reseed the gold,
from as far away as Turon Gate and the bolder's tend to have a fine flower gold over them.
I've done a bit of panning at Sofala and detected up Big Oaky creek at Wattle Flat in 82
and found my first nugget there a nice 2 gram bit of au
sadly I included it in with some gold I sold and realised what I had done after it was to late.
I've panned at Hargraves and run a sluice on the Meroo at Maitland Bar
and yes crushed a lot of rocks in the dolly
but only those rocks that looked like they may have something to hide.

So far over the weekend have crushed every bit of quartz and every bit of the bluestone with quartz vein running thru it for a total of zero gold. Still have conglomerate left and the usual river rock which I don't think I will bother with. Can anyone recomemend any useful links regarding crushing and what to look for thanks

Most of the rocks I've crushed in the passed did show a flake of gold which was a very visible sign,
those that didn't show any I didn't worry about. sorry I can't help you with a reference or a link on how to spot a clue |
