Where the hell did all the attitude come from? I would be the first to agree that in the video the sucker could be more efficient, but goldgrabber did address this in the video and in the response, talking about the elbow. Yes other suckers use sumps, like the one we have, and the ball idea Andy showed is interesting.
If you want to see the gold they found why not ask nicely? I have seen some of the gold from that trip, that he posted on another forum. Telling them to throw away their gear or show gold found is a good way to make people want to stop posting on trips or gear.
Nothing wrong with a bit of constructive criticism, but at least try to be constructive rather than just criticize.

Looking at Andys Video, I see where I went wrong with the yabby pump, I used the tennice ball, but because the tube is a stainless steal tube it kept cutting the string and the ball floated off. And the creek gravel cut the plunger washer out in a very short time. I will re think the whole thing. The blue dog hand dredge and bucket looks good but the price makes the plastic bucket worth megga $$$.A few pices of PVC pipe etc., it is a rip off, same as the minelab 7000,that is the down side of what is a hobby. So Goldgrabber is way out front, and any one that has a go at making homemade and puts it up on a post for people like me to judge, cant get better than that. And the fact he knows how to attach the utube video, to this forum from the other side of the world, is gold.

Well first off, I will point out this pump is nothing like a yabbie pump, my mate bought one of those yabbie pumps because he didn't want to make a pump himself (exactly for as you describe, retrieving live bait from the sand), he used it once and literally threw it in the bin before we even finished a day with it and he used a spade the rest of that trip and he then made his 4" pump instead.
I've repeatedly stated time and again (and also pointed out twice in the video) that placing a bend on the end of the pipe would dramatically reduce any material escaping from the pipe. All my own pumps have bends on already but this was my mates and he's one of those people who has to do it his own way, no matter how many times he's advised an improvement could be made, however, these pumps are all ANYBODY uses in the UK. These type of pumps are the only allowed retrieval device (other than a shovel) as no powered dredges are allowed in the UK, so ALL UK prospectors use this type of pump but people generally use the 2 1/2" version as it uses standard down pipe, very easy to make and efficient to use and lighter to move than a 4".
All the gold myself and my friends have found (along with 90% of all UK prospectors gold finds) have all been recovered using pumps like this (either 2 1/2" or 4") so to say I should just throw the pump away, you might as well send a memo to all UK gold prospectors to say "you're all doing it wrong, you might as well all chuck you're equipment in the bin!". If anyone looks at my YouTube channel, you will see this pump being used in a couple of other videos and 1 shows it completely filling a garden classifier in JUST 3 PUMPS, so to say the pump is useless and won't keep hold of any material is blatantly incorrect considering all gold retrieved so far has all come from using these pumps. Also on my channel are instructions showing how these pumps are made so anyone can see how they vary from a (useless) yabbie pump. Also to say the gold will instantly drop out the pipe is incorrect because if that was the case, no-one in the UK would find anything as everyone's gold would be constantly dropping out their pumps rather than into their buckets! Another thing to note is that we were working a "dead area (no current)" so we knew if anything did drop, it would only drop back into the area where we'd be taking the next pump from so it would then be the first piece of material in the pipe on the following pump so wouldn't be able to drop.
It terms of gold found, everything I've retrieved so far this year is still sat in buckets waiting to be panned/blue bowled. I know I've been on the gold as my sluice shows it in the top riffles but as I like to have something to do prospecting wise over the winter, I've been leaving all the material I've recovered so far this year for the winter down time. I could put up a picture to show some of the chunkier pieces of gold I've found (all found with my 2 1/2" pump!) but as someone's already pointed out, I've already shown it on other forums and don't feel like I NEED to prove my finds to anyone on here...
I also really don't like the feeling that I have to come on and justify how I retrieve my gold and end up defending how all UK panners retrieve their material because we all use pumps like this over here (as well as US States where powered dredging is banned). I placed the video online to share tips and tricks how other prospectors carry out the hobby around the world as some people are totally unaware of how these pumps work or are made and I even made TWO reference in the video on how to stop (the minimal) material escaping from the pipe, but to then just see comments saying it's rubbish, it can't hold material, it's all wrong, the equipment is junk and should be binned etc isn't exactly making me want to come back to continue posting...

Goldgrabber you do not have to feel like you must justify anything to anyone.
I congratulate for trying something different, and if it works for you then who cares what everyone else thinks.
This is NOT a forum that openly promotes ill feelings between our members. If those of you who wish to publically criticise anyone, join another forum.

Great idea. I think you can appreciate some of the suggestions. Rubber ball? S Bend? Gold trap in pipe? Donnybrook
