hello I found that if you check daily you will see the deeper pits and scratches will vanish , when this happens change to a finer grit until that has removed the scratches from the last grit and so on until your down to 2000 or 3000 grit from there i use cerium oxide mixed quite thick with water and washing up liquid. the grit is corundum , in uk I get it from the abrasives dealer , (i dont kow if there are such places in oz) but you probably have astronomy clubs etc that manufacture there own telescopes , they will use it and yes it does take a few weeks , you will soon get a "feel" for the job .. regards John

Thanks for the response guys, and thanks for the pointers johnf. After doing one batch from start to finish, i can see where i made some mistakes but most will be fixable by re tumbling i think. Out of all the rocks there are probaby only 3 or 4 which i dont think need any more work, alot of the shiney ones still have some small pits that need to be tidyed up. In the final polish i believe i did not have enough material in the barrel. I had more plastic pelots on order but was too impatient, i think this may account for a bit of the damage i see. Johnf may i ask if there is much differece adding washing up liquid with the polish? I have not heard of that before. I did read after the final polish you can burnish (wich i believe is just tubling with some hard soap). As my next batch come through i will add rocks from the first lot in the stages where i think they need more time

Shivan there are looking great are they rocks you just picked up at oallen. It almost makes me want to start picking up rocks and getting a tumbler but I don't think I have the patience and would want to look all the time. and I think doing gold and sapphires is probally enough at this stage but saying that the minister for war and finance just seen the pic's of yours and is like I found some pretty rocks maybe we should polish them up . Keep up the good work mate, looking good. Regards skip
