Most work was done in the creek downstream from the school (above the falls some way) - the reserve at the junction of Livingstone Ck is in the middle of it. Note that any decent size shaft or tunnel in that area is a red herring - those in hardrock never found a trace and were for exploration. Best gold in creek and at base of spurs just above creek. Good luck.

Stuff at base of spurs thought to be old high level gravels, that the creek has cut down through so creek is now lower.

Hi
I am staying in Foster for a few days and I am planning to do some panning in Turton creek for a few hrs on Thursday.
Is it ok to pan around Livingstone creek?
Anyone fancy meeting up?

Just a brief note on the topic of gold not associated with quartz. One theory has much of our alluvial gold being laid down during the great comet bombardment phase of our planet's development. Gold would have been spread across the ground as comets disintegrated in the atmosphere (this would actually explain a lot about the observed shape of many nuggets found without any form of host rock ... ) and then been concentrated in watercourses. Deep Leads were often old watercourses that had been covered by lava flows millenia ago that the oldtimers had dug down to and followed - although 100ft underground, they were still mining alluvial gold! Some of these buried watercourses have resurfaced due to subsequent upthrust actions in the earth's crusts ... others have never been buried and their gravels form the "high benches" in valleys that were so often profitably worked by the oldtimers. Some of them would have been obliterated by glacial flow during ice ages, their materials spread out to re-concentrate in new watercourses as the atmosphere warmed once more. Not all gold therefore has a traceable "source".

Hi Jezza, I have just come across your post about exploring the old turtons creek gold mine, we have been out twice trying to find it with no luck a local told me if you jumped down the bank from either the 2nd or 3 rd corner from the top of turtons creek road we should be right on it once we cross the creek but no luck so far, lots of fallen trees and big ferns that we had to bash through. Can you give us any better instructions?

It's not far from the top of the road so the directions aren't to far off. I'll try my best to give clearer directions. There is a corner in the road near the top that has plenty of placing to park, you'll know when you have found this corner one you can park the car easy, 2ndly it also is on a tributary. That goes under the road, tributary is quite steep to enter on left hand side and right hand side of road also steep. Park the car there and walk back to the falls, the next corner not bend should be the one your looking for, it's not that steep into the creek still steep but not as aggressive to get into it, this also has a tributary but it's not steep on right hand side of the road as you look towards the falls. The mine entrance also looks half full this is just a mound of dirt and fallen tree as I can remember, sitting in front of it but entrance is pretty clear. So can be hard to see, it been 5-6years since I last sent there and maybe 4 since I had the highbanker in the area burrrimg away. You'll see animal tracks down into the creek, the mine is also on the opposite side of the creek to the road. The mine is full of water and the bats are friendly, waders are a must and a poky stick to test the flooring, and a good light and back up gets dark real quick in there. It goes in a bloody long way. If I was still living in the area would be more then happy to show ya where it is, then give some half instructions hoping you'll get there.
