G'day 360search, Yep that is one method I still use to keep myself in form. I don't use sinkers but shave small pieces off sheet lead and cut them small. Some I flatten a bit and others I roll a fine file over to round them a bit. Spray paint with flouro marking paint and off I go. Ric G'day Ric, I never thought about making up some lead filings to pan, although after last weekend experiencing flour gold for the first time from the nuggety pickers I am use to on my home stomping grounds. Panning lead filings will give that confidence boost that i needed on the last weekend trip as I have a feeling I lost alot of dust. It also made me reassess if my high-banking set up should be changed to the area that i'm going to each time.. Roland

Hi Roland, Yeah I don't file the lead although that is a thought. I just use the file because it grips the lead and rolls it into tiny sort of rounded shapes that resemble tiny pieces of alluvial from the creeks. I flatten out some to try and have something like the real thing. Ric

My Grandfather on the Peel River at Piallamore, Dungowen and Nundle. He loved grass roots along the banks such as Johnson Grass and Kykiu. But since Google came about with YouTube etc I've learned so much more....... Just have to put in practice now!!

Good old you tube. One video is worth a thousand books. Gold Hog does some great ones. Some are just merchant bankers.

Yes still have my blue bowl. Still use it to check our cons, but only ever get a few specs from the material we have panned. Still its a good way to spend a couple of hours when you can't get out for a dig

Initially my grandfather got me into it as a young kind, 8-10 years old and he showed me in a tub on the backyard. he had a dump pile of clay's under a gum tree that i used to hit up and wash n wash. i remember a school trip out to Andersons creek Warrandyte around that time too where the bus pulled down into the car park and theres this crazy oldtimer looking bloke up to his knees in the creek doing the whole show.. digging to rocker box and a full wash down with a few specks to show at the end.. i was the only kid that day bringing my own pans ############## few years back i got itchy feet as i started my dirty 30's and got sick of going fishing all the time and not catching anything so i ordered myself a Garret deluxe kit for about 90$ and watched the dvds that came with it. i did alot of armchair prospecting on Youtube and found a bunch of channels to subscribe to that i still watch in detail every few weeks. once my kit arrived i duck out to warrandyte and grabbed a bucket worth of gravel from the mouth of Andersons creek on the yarra.. got some strange looks that day.. took that bucket home and panned it down 5-6 times, added sinker cuts and filings and worked it over again. over that next few months i spent dozens of hours down at warrandyte / andersons creek... cheers all - daniel.
