Looks like a beautiful spot. Shame there wasn't a bit more gold in the pan, but looks very interesting.

Hey Lord I was just doing some research on that spot the other day but down the river further, 15km East towards the mountain area between Sofala and Capertee.Anyway 4wd access only I think looking at it from Google Earth but has all the signs of a good spot all along that river, would like to hit it with a metal detector ,thought about buying a sluice and an auto panner but think I will just stick with a metal detector for now.the auto panner is a bit pricey and im too lazy to sit there and pan,I wont even dig more than 15cm on a beach, lol. According to my research, theres Gold along that river, just got to find it.

I just think I wasn't looking in the right spots shivan. First time to a new place, I'm happy to just find any gold.
DMG I left my detector at home for this trip and just focused on panning. Didn't even break out my sluice. But the good news is, I didn't see any snakes down by the river and I was walking through some pretty tall grass and all around the rocky bedrock.
I'd be happy to get out my Xterra 705 and try to swing at the spot near there with you sometime.

This is part of what I got out of this trip. The flakes seem to be a big larger than Oallen Ford.

Wow.. didn't see any Red Bellys while working the bedrock. Thanks for the warning though. I've gotten out to Oberon and Ophir, but never to Hill End yet. I was so close too at Coles Bridge. I plan to get back up there this weekend and finish working some bedrock areas I wasn't able to get to, now that I have a 1/4 and 1/8 pan sieves. I've been classifying only down to 1/2 before today and having to work through a lot of gravel. Always looking to make the trip out with others from Sydney. Cheers! Jon

I've heard of bigger gold in Ophir, but all on private land. I'm down south in the Sutherland Shire.
Takes me a bit to go anywhere, as I have to drive up north to the M5 or M4 before I can head out west. And it's about an hour's drive one way just to visit the Miner's Den in Parramatta.

I found 2 of these in my pan from Coles Bridge. They are silver in color, malleable like gold, and heavier like gold as well. Anyone know what this could be? Lead? Silver? I'm not sure what other metals are found in the Turon River.

Quite possibly mercury covered gold.Mercury is naturally occuring as well as left over in gold areas by the old-timers, and can find it's own way onto wild gold. Heating in a saucepan on the stove should be enough heat to make the Mercury gas off and if only on 1 or 2 small flakes won't be enough to do any lasting damage - on the backyard bbq is a better place if you are in any way worried.

Interesting.. Thanks for the info, I lost one of the pieces, so just have the one left in the photo. I'm thinking it could be lead as it seems lighter than gold, but still acts in the pan as a heavy.
