Hi, anyone know of any spots around Mt Isa or Cloncurry that are worth a try. I have found a couple of small bits at Sunday Gully but it was hard work getting them! I've heard of a few places near Cloncurry but I'm not sure if they are on leased land.

Hi streak
I used to work at the Selwyn mine and know of a couple of areas where there was alluvial ground around the Curry. Top Camp to the south of town and Tick Hill further to the south. I know that the whole region is under lease but the best approach is to approach someone you may see around the place and ask - most companies will not have any problems. Almost all the creeks will be dry however and when they are wet it would be too dangerouse to try and get in there so be careful. I do not know of any areas where there were nuggets, but some others may know. Have a look on some geological maps and see if there are any "surfacing" areas noted. Also an old (1950's) geological bulletin from the BMR (Bureau of Mineral resources, Geology and Geophysics - now called Geoscience Australia) is a very good reference.

Thanks Araluen,
I have heard of Top Camp but I read somewhere that it is on leased land so I didn't think it would be worth trying. But like you say they might not have a problem with looking for alluvial gold. I'm not sure of the laws but I would assume the lease wouldn't cover the river and creek beds? I guess access to the creeks would be the problem. Ill check out that BMR bulletin, thanks.

The leases will cover the creeks and rivers, but what you can do is to check out the Qld department of mines or whatever they call it, webs site and find the current leases maps. Get the name of the company and then give them a call. In my experience most companies are more than happy to let people on so mong as they do not get into trouble or something or upset their equipment.
