Hi all,
its been a while. I've been pretty busy the last 5mnths with work.
I hope your all doing fine.
Finally the dry season is here in NT.
I have been out twice prospecting so far.
The first weekend about 3weeks ago we went to our starter spot for the season. The margaret diggings. one of the richest gold fields ever in the NT.
It amaze's me how we are still getting gold from that place. You would have thought the chinese got the lot going by the amount of diggings in the field.
2 of the mates had there minelabs with them. A gpx3500 & 4000.
They both got nuggets the first 2hours after arrival, then nothing after that for the rest of the weekend.
The 3500 picked up 2 nuggets. a 6 & 4 grammer . the 4000 got a 26.5 gram specimen with 90% gold or more in it. lovely piece.
ME- I just fiddled around in the creeks & took specimens with the lease owner.
2 hours before it was time to leave. I & the lease owner decided to have a pan in the creek only 40 yards from camp.
after panning for an hour we both agreed 1 more pan before heading back to camp for a cuppa & to pack up.
The lease owner turned to me & said well get aload of this.
His last pan had some nice chunky gold in it.lovely color too!!
I wanted to keep it..but had nothing to put it in. so i took a photo & we threw it back to the creek.
atleast we know this creek would be worth working it with a banjo or sluice.
Last weekend was another story..i had come down with a cold for the weekend. I just pottered around feeling sorry for myself...hehe! but we all do that hey!
cheers
Dave

Dave, next time ,don't threw the gold away, get some clay and roll it into a ball ,put the gold in it and clean it up at home.
Cheers Hennes

thanks!!

Dave, is that you that found that Mn reef in NT and posted pics of the Mn nodules, the 2 trenches you dug by hand?
Sounds like you have some exciting work to do with the gold lease and make the best of the dry season. Most interesting too. please keep us up to date with pics etc of how you go.
Small-scale mining is a dream many fossickers and small- time prospectors dream about being part of. Sometimes the best we can hope for is to live it out through others stories and successes.
Good luck, cheers. Eugene

Interesting reading about all the different places and adventures our prospector friends are having. But this is the first time I have heard of a prospector throwing gold back into the river, and going golding without a small container in the pocket.
His last pan had some nice chunky gold in it.lovely color too!!
I wanted to keep it..but had nothing to put it in. so i took a photo & we threw it back to the creek.
LOL, I would have torn a piece out of my shirt to keep the treasure.
Oh well, I'll live and learn.

Welcome Back Dave - we wondered where you had gone.
Throwing the gold back? Sounds like I'll have to review your medication.
Cheers

hehe!! yes..you lot must think we are crazy throwing it back..but you have to understand that Dave in Darwin has found many reefs in his time.
Dave in Darwin is a fair dinkum ozie prospector who only wants to find the source(the reef). He has told me many times that there is no money in useing a detector. The big money is in the reefs. although alot of mining companys have 100's of square miles under EL's ,they do not explore all this country. so there is plenty to be found.
Some of the big mines up here were once Dave's.
So dave is not interested in keeping small gold. Its was his gold & he threw it back....i even said WTF!! He gave me a strange look as if to say you want that little bit, your mad!!
But I am getting like him(must be from following him around the fields), pan a spot & get a show of gold, throw it back, then i note it for future excavation. I have even got rid of my detectors.
I have got right into this exploreing for new source's of gold.
At this field,we are trying to find the reef that has never been found. There is nuggets on the hills, coarse to water worn gold in the creeks. but no fines in the creek or on the hills. We know theres gold there. But were is it coming from.
If we fined it ,It'll be put down in the history books.
I'll be making a bigger banjo soon for my 3inch pump. Then i'll get right into this creek.
Thanks for the welcome Back Mrs Fly. I hope you & Mr Fly doing fine.
cheers
Dave

Dave, you have got to be one lucky bugga.
The opportunity to learn from Dave who has a lot of field experience finding reefs of manganese and gold is a rare opportunity. He sounds like a great bloke and knows what he is about. Take up any chance to travel, help and learn as much as you can, including loaming etc.
The fine alluvial stuff will be there for your banjo later.
Good luck and share your experiences when you can.
Cheers, Eugene

This time the gold was under size!

Dave,
do you have an inspector who goes around checking you have not kept undersized gold or should that be kept oversized gold?
Great pic of the weathered quartz blow. Saw many of these when I was wandering around in WA last year.
cheers, Eugene

LOL, undersize gold??? Do they think it will grow and multiply like the fish do???
Someone is either taking the mickey out of you, or NT lawmakers imbibed in something that was not water.
Three cheers for Victoria.

From: Poly Sent: 21/06/2008 9:17 AM
lol..yeah....just mucking around Budgie.
I am going back out to this eroded quartz today.
I'll get some pic's whilst there.
there is a creek just down the hill from it.
I hope it is still running , if so i'll pan it. If i get color..i'll keep it this time. I am loaded with plastic bottles & no doubt there will be clay in the creek. Hannes idea with the clay is a bottler. I may just do that.
shall report back sunday night.
cheers!
