A Hand Auger is used for sampling and soil research. And is considered by some to be a very important part of there prospecting kit. Check the link out flash stuff indeed. James

Gday James, good link there. I have found that 4 or more flakes in a small(1 cup) auger sample is great ground for the banjo. If anyone finds more than 10 and I'll gladly investigate the spot to verify the test lol. :-)

Brian, Good to have you back on line mate. My word they have some flash auger bit’s they reckon they get down to 10 meters. James

And I thought Mr Fly was El Loco for wanting to take the post hole digger to do some test sampling up the mountain.
This golding business is starting to get very serious indeed.
Cheers

Have a look at this site. They have some really good gear but it's expensive.

P.S. an auger would be really, really handy for a project I have going at the moment. Might look at making one.

now mum use to give me the posthole digger to dig the holes for the fence posts...reconned i needed strengthening up...it looked very simular to them...
What i mostly remember was that its hard work, and your shoulders ached after using it...actually that might explain why i have broad shoulders...
I think it may be a good thing to buy for my son, but then two holes and it would go rusty in the shed...rofl...
Nice piece of gear if you needed one...

We also have to remember Mrs Fly is the "post hole digger" lol.

Spud mate this is what you need, it can drill to 1.1 meters through loam, shale & clay. You will also need a 12 inch brace the worm on the bit must be the same as mine. I have yet to make one for sand when I’m better I will do so mate they are so easy to use. James
P.S Eugene that e/mail mate did not help me at all you bugger! {sob}

James mate, nice auger if the sandy gravel stick in the groove of the auger. Most clays etc would be damp and would stick.
Mate, I though I would lift your spirits with those pics ! Gotta try harder next time. I'm still a learner. Ya gotta come down here.
We are getting rain at last down here. Has been very dry. Must be climate change eh? he he

G'day James,
I have got a few old style auger bits, the type that originally were used in those hand braces.
I was thinking of welding an extention to one I have which is 1 1/4"diameter.
The spirals in the older ones would appear to be able to hold a better sample.
What are your thoughts on this?
Cheers Ric.

Eugene mate you are no longer a learner, I loved the look at that area mate but you must do a cross cut trench in that spot. if you do I feel the results will blow you away. cheers mate James

Spud mate it is, note the suction break on the worm of the bit, most important. As you use the auger you poor just a tad of water in the hole as you drill makes the dirt go mush and is picked up easy. James
From: Banjo520 Sent: 24/06/2008 9:15 AM
Ric, they work ok but they are very hard to reverse drill if your auger gets stuck. I would go no bigger than ¾ inch. James
From: AlluvialRic Sent: 24/06/2008 5:47 PM
Thanks James, Now you point it out I can see how they might jam up. with he bigger gap in the spiral.
Cheers Ric.
