Gday mates, I'm going to sign up for a course in silversmithing next term, just wondering if anyone else here makes their own jewellery / items from gold, silver or other PMs? I'm excited but also a little worried because I've NEVER been handy in the sense of building things and working with wood or metal.. so I hope I get better quick once I start the class. And also, thought I'd ask, if anyone used to do it and still has any PMs that they wanna sell drop me a message incase I can buy them for my class materials (mates rates?! LOL! ;D hehe).. like sheet, wire, solder etc.

Hi Rolley, I cut and polish my own gemstones and I make jewelry in gold and silver. I have read many books on the subject but I find practical experience is 75% better than theory. Crafting in metal is a whole new experience, a whole new volume in your life. As with all hobby and recreational equipment the tools can be very expensive, but you can improvise and reconstruct every day items to suffice. I always say advice should be free, I have no problem sharing my knowledge with you Flying Scott

Thanks Scott, in a few months when the classes start I'm sure I'll want to ask you more. Luckily my Mum has done the course before so she gave me (to borrow indefinitely haha) all her tools and a few bits of metal scraps. Oh, I do have one initial question.. have you worked Palladium? If so please share your experience compared to silver and gold Thanks!

When you make some thing, please post a photo, as I would like to what your making, silversmithing must be like a blacksmith only with a smaller hammer. Labrador

Rolley mate, I keep it simple Have only used gold and silver. I practiced my soldering skills on copper wire untill I got the hang of "capillary action" Flying Scott

Hey Lab, hey Scott, guess what.. made my first two rings on the weekend!! YAYYYYY!!! ;D It's tiny cuz I made it for my daughter hehehe It's great fun.. though I have made a few stuff ups trying to make a third ring.. i wanted to fuse gold and copper grounds to the surface of the ring but my blow torch blew all my grinds off in the air hahaha, then i tried some other stuff but i think i've basically stuffed 2 rings up completely (so not counting them when I say I made my first two.. I've actually made four all up, 2 of them are sweet as like in the pic). Anyway.. practice practice

Any of you intending getting into jewelry making, or metal craft. I see Aldi is selling a Dremmel package, consisting of Dremmel and a variety of accessories, = grinding, buffing, drilling and sanding attachments. The package is selling for $49.90. I think that is a bargain price. It's a must in jewelry making. Flying Scott.
