Hi, just wondering if there is still gold to be found in and around the creeks of Nundle? Have been told by a local that alluvial gold still around as the "source" hasn't been found. I have been panning twice (complete novice) and haven't seen any colour. Any ideas would be greatly appreiciated.

Hi dejava, It is unusual to not find a few specks in a known alluvial creek, check which way up your holding your pan, { I am just joking,} Have you seen any one else panning there and if they saw any gold ? And I still look at utube myself for panning styles and to pick up tips, to make sure my style is working, and if there are any new styles of pans, I recently brought a Turbo Pan, and I doubt I would use it to often over the standard pans, I would also do some goggle searches on reading the creeks and where gold travels in rivers and creeks. Hope I have helped in some way, sorry for the upside down pan thing. Cheers Lab

I know a few people who have gotten some colour on their recent trips. A good place to get some gems, crystals and other minerals too. Ill make it out there one day.

I took a photo of where I was. Can I send it to you to find out what you think? My email is dejavu23_au@yahoo.com Cheers Aka upside down pan : )

dejavu, if you start a photobucket account (its free) you can upload your photo there and then post the link in the thread(that is if you want to). This is the map i have for fossicking there, have not done any more reserch yet as i have not made it out that way. You can fossick on any of the crown land as far as i am aware. I have heard of some bigger niggets being found round bowling alley point but not sure if that was detecting, or if it was on private property. I believe there are a video or two on youtube that show a bit of prospecting at Nundle.

A great tip for testing / training your panning methods is to cut some flakes off a fishing sinker. Various sizes then pan / practice it down; i did this in my garage for weeks grab a pan of gravel, throw in a select number of your sinker lead flakes and pan down and try to recover all of them. As others have said, when starting out do alot of "arm chair prospecting" on youtube. there are some great "channels" i watch and re-watch for all the great info they contain. look for: "hurtHawks" "indyme2" "TheGoldProspector D'arcy Cooper" "Wal nLiz" & "YankeeGoldProspect" Great info and tips, and hours of enjoyment. cheers - daniel

I've been there a few times. The gold is patchy but exists, and those who work hard and smart will often be rewarded. It's best to try after some good flooding rain. The sources of the gold are discussed in a number of geological reports. IIRC there were/are multiple sources, and multiple types of primary and secondary depositions. Today, much of the fine flaky gold that regularly replenishes the Peel River and its tributaries is being eroded from the surrounding rocks, not from reefs - a situation comparable to Uralla in NSW and Reedy Creek in NW Victoria.
IMO, much of the charm of fossicking at Nundle is due to the town and its inhabitants. It has excellent facilities and food, and lovely people.
