Dammm, i can,t find that anywhere, all i keep comming up with is this on a few different sites worded different but the same result. Its not that i wanna put a question up but its messing with my brain...
St Arnaud, VIC
St Arnaud was named after the marshal who led the French Army into the Crimean War. The field was discovered by a prospecting party of seven, led by Richard Higgs, who were apparently more interested in seeking government rewards than trying their fortunes at mining. The gold was deemed insufficient to obtain a reward. The field was successfully opened up in January 1855, by a digger named Pilchard. Pilchard was reputedly so excited by what he had found that he ran from the gully he was prospecting declaring that he had found another Bendigo. The first St Arnaud gold rush peaked in April 1855, with a reported three thousand diggers on the field.

I have been off checking my information, it is a bit all over the place and who did what and said what in 1855. the originional story I first saw was clear to witch man poped out of the hole, I cant find it now, how ever a group of seven and a few beers later, we know how that ends up. Later the New Bendigo become StArnurd in 1886. I am happy to be corected if I have not got it right, but should be band from coming up with the next questions, but still be alowed to gusse. A one in 7 chance for 2 cules, Frederick Dutton Robert griffin Richard Higgs Thomas Wembridge David pilchard Samuel Scott Cearns Fredrick Steward That was the party sent to find a gold feild. And one of them has a relitive/Desendent who is a member of this fourum. Lab

I have been searching, And found TWO statements that Pilchard found the reef, and that is out weighing the ONE entery in a book to Thomas Wembridge, WHO I THOUGHT. finding it, there is a further articles that dont say clearly. In the Light of Stinky Pete being more right, I am saying Lenny, your answer is CORECT. Unless Nugget893 has any other evedence. Lets play on and I look foward to trying to answer your question.
FYI there is a can/monument just out of St Arnuard on the wedderburn road with the names of the men who were in the party ( it dosent say eather ) Labrador
