Has anyone found a cheap range of classifiers in Australia. The price of the Yankee ones is okay but the postage kills. The local retails prices that I have seen so far are way over the top.

By classifiers I guess you mean sieves. There are some cheap plaastic jobs around but the stainless or aluminium are best and generally last many years if looked after so worth the $$$$ in the long run. $30 - $35 is not unreasonable for a decent sieve. www.reedsprospecting.com.au/shop/detail/sieves-5-mm/

Finding the mesh is the hard bit to make your own. Fly wire or gutter guard are a couple of options but I want very fine. The anti splatter screens for cooking are also another option. Cut the handle off and it drops into a bucket. That is as fine as I have been able to find though.

I have even made some out of 10 inch plan pot tops. Gutter guard, fly etc, works great but I was looking at 100 or 150 mesh. Only classifiers I can buy have a huge postage cost. I can source the mesh in Au easily enough ( but a minimum purchase). Australian retailers seem to concentrate on detectors. I guess that is where the profit is.

I was actually looking for finer mesh. 30,50, 70, 100, 150 etc. From some inquiries I made with a plastics manufacturer in China, it would be possible to import them for around $11 each. However, I have no need for 50 of each size and no desire to go down those paths. That is why I asked the question because I feel $35 or $40 is too much plus postage. However, seems I have no choice. Think I might go with one of the 5 piece stacks from China.

Did you check the links I posted? Both have classifiers down to 100 mesh (check the 2nd page of both sites)and both are Australian prospecting shops. Or was the price the issue? Unless you have hell of a lot of material 150 mesh may not be worth it, for us the bulk of concentrates normally are in the 50-70 mesh range, with a little in the 100 mesh and only a tiny bit 100+. Though the bulk of the gold is in the 70-100 mesh cons.

The majority of my gold is minus 100 but I have also panned a 5 grm nugget from the same location. So, anything is possible. A lot of magnetite sand also. I have a mate that runs it through a blue bowl. Works great. Trouble is, it needs to be classified into a lot of sizes. I want to be able to give him a sample of each size so he can just run it.

Of course,he doesn't really use a blue bowl because they are illegal to use for fossicking in Queensland.

Hi glot, Thats a really odd piece of equipment to ban. How come the Qld gov would ban the use of a blue bowl which is primarily used at home for cleanups?
