I have been reading some old records regard Gold at Dollys Creek. I first Knew this location as an excellent panning location. It is also know for sapphires. I found a nice blue sapphire there about twenty years ago when panning. Down near the bridge on Forrest Road. Since about the mid nineties when the SD Minelab came out it has also been a steady source of nuggets. The biggest of which was 15 ounces about 8 years ago with a GPX 4500. The second biggest a 10 ounce specimen with the first SD. Third biggest find five ounces by a prospecting club with an SD about 11 years ago. And numerous nuggets around the one ounce size. plus many pieces between 1-10 grams. Most of this stuff has been found high on the hills. Smaller stuff down towards the gullies. There is still gold to find but it is getting harder. Just several weeks ago a couple of dudes found two nice pieces totaling 11 grams. Happy hunting.

pretty easy to get to, but, also easy to get lost as there is a maze of backroads south of Ballarat-Ballan and some of the sign-posting is fairly crap. last week I did a reconnaissance of the vicinity and rode around the area on my motorbike, even on the dirt back tracks like Forest and Dolly's Creek Road are well graveled. don't need a 4x4 unless the weather gets really wet. nearby is the town of Egerton that still has a stamper battery locked away in a shed. must have been a lot of gold taken out of the joint

Mt Egerton was worked in the last decade hence the battery I imagine. I think the reason for the gold in the hills at Dollys Creek is that the hilltops are capped by gravel from a much older stream bed that contains the gold and brought it from the Mt Egerton area - anything in the modern streams (which have cit to a lower elevation than the old gravels) is only secondarily-derived from the gravel on the hilltops. The quartz reefs from which the gold was derived aren't in the Dollys Creek area itself. There is a book on the history of Dollys Creek, with maps of old workings.
