Thinking of acquiring a metal detector in the price range of approx $500-$800.
This will be my first ever detector so any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. I am mostly interested in gold prospecting in central Victorian bushland, but wouldn't mind leaving the options open in case of traveling.

I was down in miners den a couple of weeks ago and they had the xterra 705 dual pack for $800 and the Eureka gold for $800.
Xterra has coin mode and prospecting mode, so you get target ID in coin mode. frequency is built in to the individual coil. (in the dual pack you get 9inch concentric coil 7.5kHz and 10x5 DD 18.75kHz) Eureka gold lets you change frequency with a switch on the detector 6.4, 20 and 60kHz.
I went with the 705 dual for a bit more versatility, because I like to dig up old farm houses for relics and coins.

Have you ever found gold with it ? I've only just started looking for gold with it, spent all of four hours yesterday in the hills fiddling with settings having a blast. If it finds gold I'll be happy, I'll probably get a lot more enjoyment out of it than I will gold, which suits me. Anyway, they're in your price range, punch them in youtube or google and see what they find.

A gold bug 2 might be worth a look. Or save a few more coins for an SD model minelab.

Hard to come by but Gold Bug 2 is the go if you can find one second hand I've heard a lot of good reports about them being deadly on small nuggets a Minelab SD2200 is a good detector if you can get one cheap there very good on depth or a GPX4000 but I think this one may be out of your price range cheers Harry
