I was walking along a track metal detecting with my daughter the other day , I was in front she was behind me, I walked from sunlight to the shaded area of trees with my head down watching the coil ,not paying much attention to what was up front , before I knew it I was stepping over a tiger snake on the track , and like a flash it struck and hit my jeans , I jumped around 2 foot in the air , with a pick and detector trying to stay upright , then jumped forward away from the snake , so if you saw a guy with his pants down in colombine , it wasn't a flasher !! It's was just me checking for snake bite, my daughter behind me said " gee dad that was close" so when your out n about look up from time to time

One of the biggest mistakes a detector operator can make is not keeping an eye on the surrounding area. Not only snakes but mine shafts can be a big problem if you don't see them Have also heard a few stories of people getting lost not paying attention to where they were wandering. Glad to hear it didn't wing you and you and your daughter are ok.

I recently detected in fairly thick scrub in the old Tanjil Goldfields (Gippsland, Vic) following old diggings, pretty engrossed in what I was doing. Time passed and when I came to my senses, I looked up and thought crikey where am I, which way way back (to the boat - Tanjil's mostly under Blue Rock Lake now) ?? I didn't panic as such, but I was getting a little anxious - when I calmed down, I worked it all out and headed back pretty quick to the boat. So...'tis easy to become too engrossed in the task at hand.

Red belly black snakes aren't that aggressive but I had one try to bit me from behind as I walked to the creek with a pan in hand, lucky for me my son shouted out the warning high banking same place a few years latter as my son scooped some bank away a brown snake fell out of a hole and landed at his feet
non of the snakes struck at us so count your lucky stars your still with us cheers Harry P.S. we have all got lost at one stage or another I got lost near Six Mile mine at Sandstone WA following the GPS directions wrongly set by me mate found me wandering in the wrong direction that was just luck he went looking for me in his 4X4

Yea I usually carry a little hand held gps , saved my ass a few times out hunting pigs up cunnamulla qld, can get lost in a 4x4 up there in 80,000 acre propertys, not much chop in heavily treed forrests though , cannot pick up satillites real well, in the old days my mate used to take healium with him and put balloons on a string attached to his car but also only works in the flat country up north
