As you mentioned you are after a gold detector, if I was just starting out then I would be interested in a Minelab 2300. These are in the price range of just under $4000 dollars new down to around $2700 second hand. They are designed for very small gold and of course will find the bigger bits but maybe not as deep as some of the other Minelab detectors. Also the Minelab 4500 detectors are good value for money. There are other detector brands out there but I'm not familiar with their gold prospecting ability. Have you considered hiring a detector to see if you actually like detecting as it may save you the pain of buying an expensive detector only to find it's not for you. Either that or if you can borrow one from a friend. Hope this helps a bit. Rowdy

Both machines that he has mentioned, second hand or new, will find gold. But in saying that, the both machines will also find junk as small as fly wire. But this is all part of the game. Good luck in your search. nugget893
