Hi, I'm a relative rookie in the world of prospecting. I have a Minelab GPX 4000 which I am suspecting may be for a more experienced user as I seem to get a lot of "false positive" signals. Someone recently suggested that a Gold Hunter 44 was a more simplistic detector as well as being lighter to carry. I would be interested to hear the opinions of the more experienced prospectors and really appreciate your input. Having been a panner until the purchase of the Minelab I am keen on gold prospecting as opposed to gemstone hunting. Look forward to some feedback.

Hi Jan and welcome to the forum, I am unfamiliar with the Gold hunter 44 and I have never used a Minelab 4000. However I have used a Minelab Extreme and currently own and use a Minelab 5000. I would back the Minelab 4000 over the Gold Hunter as I would suspect that it is a VLF type detector and the minelab 4000 will out perform it by miles. The Minelab PI or pulse induction detectors are good and don't take all that much to get used to using them. If you are having problems and you have a minelab agent or dealer in your area I suggest you have a talk to them and even do a training course with them as it will shortcut your learning curve considerably. They will show you how to tune and most importantly to ground balance your detector. Even though the Minelab 4000 is getting a few years old they are still a very good detector. If you have any questions or are not sure of something . no matter how minor please don.t hesitate to ask as we will do our best to help you. PS what area are located in. Rowdy

It took me a while before I got used to my metal detector. Have you tried watching tutorial videos on youtube? When I bought my metal detector I actually learned a lot of tips and tricks on youtube but if youre looking for other metal detectors, Id recommend you visit this website. They have could give you an idea on what metal detector to buy.

A M8T of mine has a cabin across the Alberni inlet( PORT ALBERNI) where the 2 young guys that had canadas largest manhunt, ever lived) from the mouth of the NAHMINT River, lots of history from Spanish then English explorers, with his metal detector, he has found cannon balls, ships nails and other naval rigging....abbos had a small trading village on the site and despite there being 2 gold mines from the past, there is just too much iron that drives him mad ... told him to buy a gold pan.....spent $$$$ for his detector that he refuses to pan lol. cheers glenno/NAHMINT.
