Hi guys
Its been a while since I have been around. Haven't been doing much golding for a while.
But, I have been planning a hunting trip out to Nundle State forest, and have decided to take up the gold pan, and the detector along, and maybe spend a few of those days hunting for the yellow stuff.
Haven't really been up there and explored around. I put a few pans in the peel river for colour.
Does anyone know a good place to have a go with the detector? I have heard Hanging Rock is a place to go to.
Any help would be a great help

Gday Mithras, for dtecting, if you go to hanging rock to the chinese cemetary[ you can get plenty of info at the caravan park] follow the track in and keep to the left, look for the digs just after the first right turn, work up the hills on left, when approaching the tops be wary of old deep shafts. For panning, people in my prospecting club still duck off the road on the peel river where ever its not fenced or of course any open river areas which are not sign posted "no prospecting ", Plum tree at the TSR is always a popular spot, dont forget ,no mechanical tools ,pumps etc, . Try the cutlets at the pub, regards phill

Hi Guys
Thanks so much for the info. I will be getting maps together this week and I will let you know how I go.
I went out hunting on the weekend, didn't shoot anything, but as I was driving back through Tunea, I saw a guy out on the hills with his detector. Really got the itch going now....

Ive been panning at Nundle for a long time and pretty much all th spots mentioned are pretty good, bowling alley point down river from the enclosed public parking is another good spot. I made a crevice dredger from a yabbie pump and that works really well anywhere on the peel, if you go up around the cemetery there is a small creek there and ive got some good finds there also when its running. When you go down the track at the cemetery the only thing I found was its hard to find to park the fourby off the road. let us know how you get on. you could also try the old mountain maid mine lots of diggings and races etc, ive never detected there but could be worth a try
cheers

mithras, when are you thinking of going? My friend & I are going up for a week soon, hopefully leaving mid-week. I'm just waiting for him to get back from qld. We'll most probably be along oakenville creek in an old yellow van.
Michael.

you can access the forest there, although you should have a permit to fossick in state forest areas, however i regularly get in there on all sorts of goat tracks wthout problem, be aware some weeks are posted to deer hunters but this is well posted and not often, phill

hi guys
thanks for info. I was actually up there hunting deer for a couple of days, and thought I could get a few days out prospecting.
I called the forestry office and managed to russle up a permit for the year.
Didn't do much prospecting, with a few checks of a creek here and there. But I was after some venison and didn't even get to take the detector for a spin.
There are a few old areas that my hunting mates know about, with some old mine shafts and mullock heaps, so a few more trips out that way should give me a better understanding of where to look for.
I also just been told that there is water at my little secret spot, so I hope to get up there in a fortnight.

Hi Mithras Im interested in who you contacted to get your permit as last time I tried I got passed on to about three diffferent deptments & no one seemed to know who exactly issued the permits, so any help would be appreciated thanks. sounds like you probably walkover some likely ground while stalking the dear, dont they like getting up the head of gullies ? HMMM venison its been a long time since I tasted the nice crimson meat. Wil

hi dicko, we didn't have much luck up there unfortunately... oakenville creek was dry, so we tested another creek & found nothing there either except some little sapphires. we ended up taking a sample from another creek to pan off while at home. i haven't found nothing in it yet, but i'm hoping it gives up a little bit.

They will put you onto the right person. It will cost you $10 for the year. But specify you want to fossick Nundle and Hanging Rock. Plus any other state forests you want in that region. If you guys are interested, there is also good crystals, sapphires, Zircons and Phrase to find out that way.
