Thanks Nugget, Well I live in western Vic and have been only detecting for a couple of years, I use a 4500 on the goldfields and a sovereign GT for parks etc. I have never used a sluice before, from some of the pics posted on here it seems a very interesting (hard work) past time. I've never searched for gems either and thought that I never would, But there are some old gem sites not far from where I live, so I would like to learn more about how to search for them, as I have no idea when it comes to that.

Hi Pol so you come from the Western parts of Vic, I'm heading up to Chewton this Saturday to do a bit of detecting. I haven't done this area before so it could be interesting. I mainly hang around the Dunolly area. I too have the first model Sovereign for parks, beaches and such and have done very well with this machine, but I only have a GP3000 detector for the gold fields, but it has found gold. I'm planing to up-grade to a 4500 or even wait for the 5000 to come out. You are not wrong about hard work, sluicing, but it can be very satisfying if you are on to gold and finding a nice gem is a bonus.
