What are the methods used?

Hi All, I have never searched for gems, I was studying some maps of area's nearby here for old gold diggings. I found some old workings in a remote area. On further investigation they are not gold diggings but are/were diggings for gems. I am not sure what gems are local to the area yet but should be able to find that information hopefully.

What are the main methods for extracting gems?
Are there any good websites for further study of methods etc.?
