Hi, I thought this would make for a good discussion I think at some stage we all wonder if we are loosing gold from our pans or sluice or whatever. How do you pan your wash or concentrates? Do you have any little tricks which might help less experienced prospectors? Me, for practice I put some very small cut up split shot sinkers in with some normal wash gravel. I spray paint the lead with flouro marking paint so I can see them easy. If they ar all still in the pan at the end I am still doing it OK. What do other members do? Old Mogo

My gold specs always end up on the right side of my pan. I know there's something wrong there but I don't know what.

My brother in law is a tapper, he has his pan and taps it on a rock whilst removing the top layer of dirt from the pan. I can not do it but he does and gets through a pan in about 4 to 5 minutes with good results.

I'm ruff as guts, but confident I retain all my gold. I use the Garrett super sluice pan and hope those big riffles compensate for my failings. I'm a bit slower than this lady though. However I often worry I'm tossing out a nugget or maybe a specimen in my larger waste. I too have the gold end up in the right hand corner at times. The sight of lead in the pan makes me happy. cheers Simon

Hey Simon, I too use the Garret family of pans and fined them superior to others. I still have my first old metal ones that are 30 yrs old and use them from time to time. I use a side to side motion that settles the heavies down to the bottom, then slide off a good portion of gravels, then start again with the side to side, then brush off more gravels and so on. I must admit that I have seen fine gold go over the edge when I first started out with the old type pans but the Garret pans with their deep triple riffle system catches most gold now. And since use the the mini sluice I very rarely pan only to get the last of the gold for bottling. Everyone does it differently. Now giddyup and go get some Au, Cheers and HH Brad....

Hi Peoples, we have moved from the N.T to Myrtleford, we have a highbanker sluice that i modified a bit, but don't know if we are setting it up properly, we don't know of many places to use it or if we are in the right places, i have tried a bit of panning along wool shed river & found nothing, we took the highbanker up there the other day to try it out it worked really well and found a bit of flakey gold but i still don't know how to tell if the angles are right, can someone give me an idea of the angles. Wendy.

Wendy "hi" You are in a gold field area and just down the road is Bright also a gold field. Many creeks in both areas have gold in them. But if you want to learn more come down to the Oct meet at Neerim South Gippsland you will learn a lot and we can at the same time check out your High banker.
