I have built my high banker and all is good,it actually finds gold and is easy to transport and set up,my question is the process of the hopper tray,I see some have grizzly bars above their mesh to rid the bigger rocks and allow the fines to filter through, all this is fine but is still time consuming raking the washed mullock out of the tray, would I be gaining anything if I built a small trommel to sit above the the hopper to cut down the time washing the rocks and breaking down the clay,I have all the material in my junk pile to knock something up,the only thing i would need is a 12 volt motor, your input would be most welcome, ?

I would suggest using a windscreen wiper motor or finding one of those small motorized cars for kids they have motors in them and a gear box to increase the power and reduce the speed of the motor

Hi,
Have have had the same thoughts about a trommel, but have stayed away due to transportation issues and a fear of lugging it around.
At present I am happy with my top hopper being cable tray and nothing more. I drag the washed rocks out after every to or three shovels, I beleive this gives the riffles time to do there stuff without overloading the sluice.
So to answer your question.........I see no benefit if you are a hobbyist.
Cheers

Thanks for your reply's guys,I have looked at a windscreen motor and that would do the job,but Junankah has the right idea, the elecrtic scooter motor is perfict, the only thing is it is 24 volt, being permanet magnet it runs on 12 volt but for how long under load I don't know and is nice and light,I am useing those small scooter wheels you see the kids on around the streets to run the the barrel on which will be about 1 metre long, all of this has come from the tip and if it is to fail it has only cost me time and a bit of brain drain,Simon you are probably right, the other thing is it gives you a bit of time to rest between shovels where as the trommel is more constant, and my Idea of haveing it over the hibanker is defeating the purpose so it looks like it will turn out just being a trommel with a sluice attached under it,keeping it lite and compact is my main aim,,good luck
