I received an email reply from Merriwa Tourist office today. The Fossicking Area on the Goulbourn River off Ringwood Rd, next to the Goulbourn River National Park is no more. It's now part of the Park.
I'm not sure when it was absorbed - may have been a few years ago, but all the tourism websites for that area still list the fossicking area in their list of attractions.
Does anyone here know if it was a good place to fossick and what gemstones were obtained from there? I'm now wondering what I've missed out on.
The township of Merriwa has certainly missed out on my tourism dollar as I had been planning to spend a weekend there until I got the bad news. Actually, I might still spend an actual dollar there on a pie or drink as I pass through on my way to the gold areas around Mudgee. *sigh*

Don't know what the area was like for fossicking as I've not been there. But it's sad another area is closed. And as you hinted at, the area loses out on dollars.
