I was told about an area up taralgon creek near Leroy as a old gold area. Aparently lots of dredging and sluiceing happend. Went for a look and didn't even get a speck. Was wondering if any one has herd anything about this area. Jamie.

Nice post riverminer, from my experience I have found your summary extremely accurate. Basically all the gold I have found in NSW and WA, (never detected in Victoria) has come from places very close to extensive workings. Records are often inaccurate and hard to understand, the only real way to check likely spots is to go have a look and see if you can find any 'significant' workings. Just cause some old timer dug a few holes here and there looking for it does not mean you will find some. The old fellows seemed to get a kick out of digging, and alot of there holes were in vain. Most often large amounts of workings = large amounts of gold, and when they were pulling over 10 ounces to a 1m square hole, a gram or two lost was not worried about. That is what we are looking for, and hoping they were half blind or drunk Diggerdude

I haven,t heard of gold in that creek Jarrah, but in that direction there was gold found... Turtons Creek, & then towards Foster, there was gold found. I recon, if you live near a creek/area that has had reports of gold, then there's no harm in trying. But like the others have said, you'll have a better chance of finding colour in more well known areas. I'm keen to have a look over that way - just gotto find the time...

Thanks guys for the info. Thought it was worth a try as two differnet sources said so. My mate only told me tonight that when we were there he did get some silver stuff but very fine. Would that be a good sign? He wants to go back but im with you guys. Nothing there.
