Scratch test normally works to identify stuff, quartz has a hardness scale of 7 most glass is between 5-6.... so quartz is harder and therefore should scratch glass. Its difficult when they are that close, you may need to use a magnifying glass to check the scratches.

Hi Ian.
I am assuming you found it at Oallen. It is more than likely Zircon, would look very nice facetted. Was it left behind in you sluice along with the black sand? Zircon is fairly heavy, almost the same as ilmenite and not quite as heavy as magnetite.

Thanks for the info guys. Jeff it was found at Oallen, but funny enough it was found 2 steps from the pebble pile at the back of the highbanker, it was not wet so i was guessing we didnt dig it up but not 100% Will try the scratch test and see how i go, tho i better get a bit of scrap and stay away from the windows i guess

Mate, even if you do find that it is glass, put it through the tumbler anyway. Glass polishes up beautifully.
If you get your hands on an old TV with a CRT screen, break the screen Make sure you put an old blanket etc over the screen before hitting it with the hammer!!! & polish the bigger bits. They come out looking like a light medium grey gemstone.
There's even a name for it. SCREENPAZ. ;D

Thanks Andy never thaught about that , might be a good way to practice polishing I tryed the scratch test and it left a mark on the glass with nothing i could see thru a loupe on the rock. When i get round to polishing it ill post another pic ;D

It could even be a bit of Quartz Crystal that has been tumbling around the bottom of the creek for yonks and now has rounded of. Nugget893

Even though it appears to be round and tumbled if you see distinct sides;some may be small than others you might be able to determine its system. For ezample garnet and diamond are octahedral. You can also do an SG with a small set of gun scales weight in air as opposed to weight in water. Diamonds and quartz have very close SG's. Also hardness if you get a sapphire and try the scratch test and it does not scratch it is diamond. It appears to have that adamantic lustre but it could also be just abrasion. Black diamonds have been found in the Braidwood area so god knows what you are likely to turn up with out here. donnybrook

It is hard to make out in the photo but there seem to have been 6 flat sides at one stage up its length, all the sides are very round and look to have been water worn/tumbled that way. I have also found a slightly larger version but it has alot more flaws but also has a darkish/black tint to one part of it. If i remember Don ill bring them with me when i come for a visit.

oppps my bad in previous post .. Its Inverell NSW not Inverell QLD .... And if any of you head there in future go to the public fossicking area at Stanifer Creek ... (bout 15 minutes from Inverell) and there are litterally hundreds of really cool jellybeans and other crystals in the creek bed.
