Hi all, after recently returning back to australia im back into the swing of things again and am heading out prospecting around the Turon River. I have most things down pat except for something i believe would be important if i ever wanted to see anymore then a few flecks of color while sluicing and thats digging down to bedrock. & thats the issue i have, i really dont have any idea of where to start digging! is it as simple as picking a spot on the inside bend and digging down till i hit bedrock? or is there something more technical that i need to know? does it matter how close to the river? ie should i be high up on the inside bend basically where the river doesnt flow anymore? im assuming it can be quite a hole to get down that far in some areas but is that the general idea? or am i missing something?
If anyone has some knowledge of digging a hole too bedrock on the Turon etc and wants an extra digger one day so i can get some tips etc im available basically anyday as long as i have a few days notice
If anyone has any pics of some large holes they have dug to bedrock etc please post them! i would love to see what effort is usually involved in undertaking such a task Thanks Carms
PS ill be out Sofala=Hill End way this Thursday if anyone is out and about, ill just be setting up the power sluice and digging the wash etc after test panning a few different locations

The first thing I look for when I see bedrock are round holes bored into the rock and which are filled with hard-packed stones. I've often pulled several flakes out of these spots. I also look for ledges on the sides of the stream which extend perpendicular to the stream and whose face is pointing downstream. Sometimes these will be covered with overburden gravels and sands and may hide valuables.
I haven't worked bends yet as I too am not sure where to start with that one. I remember seeing a youtube video where they used a metal detector (one with a meter) to detect the hotspots of black sands in the stream, and of course where the black sands are you are more likely to find the gold.
