Bought today some rare-earth neodymium magnets to separate out the magnetic black sands before running my bulk sands through the sluice.

I went for the 100 x 9 x 3mm, and 50 x 5 x 3.5mm. The smaller one cost $2.50 thereabouts if you buy 10 or more, and their pulling power is surprisingly strong. Word of caution though, the material is brittle so you will need to ensure that the magnets do not snap together.
I've found some Metal Mate aluminium channel and box section in 5mm and 10mm id from Bunnings that would be perfect for making the housings for these magnets.
