Hi golddigger79 I'm also in East Gippsland (Lakes area) and just getting back into it now the kids are past toddlerhood. Lots of local rivers have gold historically (not that I've found more than fine gold). Places of interest are Bullumwaal and Boggy Creek, Nicholson River from Yahoo down to Deptford and Store Creek, Tambo and it's tributaries, Omeo area, Dargo Grant Talbotville area, Briagalong Freestone Creek area as well as many many more over our large region. Not known for prolific big nuggets round here (keeping in mind the old timers would have considered small detectable nuggets just colours). I have seen nuggets that have come from within 35km of Bairnsdale. Dredging was popular and profitable in the area before it was stopped. If you search some of the areas I've listed you'll find some good historical info. also see if you can get hold of Keith Fairweathers books about local mining through the librarary (Bedrock, Time to Remember and Brajerack). The East Gippsland branch of the PMAV have regular trips across the region, they meet in Stratford monthly. If you are good with a computer get onto GeoVic through the DPI website with the computerised map you can find the old mines and gold regions. The DPI website has a store where you can download for free heaps of local geological reports and historic maps. The areas round here are often steep and the scrub thick, makes you appreciate how tough the old timers did it. Hope that helps, maybe we'll cross paths in the bush Which part of East Gippy are you from? Gabe

Yep, Welcome to the site Golddigger.
+1 for joining the PMAV. The more local people you talk to & meet who are "in the know", the better your chances of fiding more colour...
Merry Christmas ;D

Always handy to head out with someone who knows what they are doing. There is also a lot of great info on the forum to keep you busy between trips. Let us know how you go.
