This probably sounds like a dumb question, but do any of you guys know how free you are to walk along the Turon as long as you stick to the banks. I was thinking of walking up along the Turon from Coles Bridge in a western direction to find a nice quiet spot to pan and have a little bit of a sluice. Last thing I want to do is piss off some farmers etc.

Most waterways are crown land, you can legally walk along the bank. However, some farmers can still get agro with you. If ever in doubt, knock on the door and ask. There is a web site put up by NSW DPI called TASMAP, it has a layer for the maps that shows Crownland. But be careful, not all crownland is fair game. Happy hunting Jeff

stick to the river banks (below high water mark) and go for it and if any one gives you a hard time tell them you will wate there while they go and get the cops and fishing inspector. i bet they dont come back. because the cops will tell them to ring fisheries and fisheries will laugh at them and tell them that you can be there.
i know from experience i have had a gun pointed at me a few times (not on the turon but on the fish) i stood my ground and told the owners i am allowed to be there go ring the cops if you have a prob, i have also had the cops turn up curse the owner for wasting there time. fisheries police the water ways so check with them but any MAIN water corse is fine to walk along.
for every one that thinks stuff that having a gun pointed at you well i am the same. but i also know my rights and no farmer with his gun is going to scare me off a river that they dont own.
you will mainly find that the people that tell you to bugger off are city people that have brought a property and think they own everything.

"no farmer with his gun is going to scare me off a river that they dont own" LOL What if they pull the trigger - little hard to argue if you are dead

Let them try if you are game. City people or BLOCKIES as we call them here. There is a so called "riparian zone". They dont own it. It also pays to ask,be polite, even then courtesy gets you no where.

Thanks for all the advice guys...I think I'm going to do the polite thing and let the farmer know I'll be doing a little bit of panning and sluicing on the river behind his place even though I won't actually be going onto his land. If he is going to be an asshole then thats not my problem.
Can't wait to get to new Keene sluice broken in!!!
