The holes were more than likely deeper originally but have filled up over the years . Some might look to be only 3 or 4 foot deep but a lot have a false floor , step in there and you would go straight through . Ron

i get they filled in a bit but cant see them being that deep that id fall very far. There are some mines in ther aswell and you would fall a long way down in them

Hi Littleazza, The old timers dug these pot holes looking for the pay streak in alluvial drifts or high benches.
One hill I prospect on has about 12 of these winzes 500 or 600mm wide x 1me or 1200mm long and are about 7me deep. dictionary meaning(winze [winz] noun Mining. a vertical or inclined shaft driven downward from a drift into an orebody)
The reason they are those dimensions is because they didn't need a ladder or a windlass to get to the bottom. They cut steps in the wall and shimmied up and down the wall. They hoisted the the "stuff" up with a bucket on a rope and there was just enough room to swing a small pick at the bottom. This way they were able to save time and labor and get to the bottom quicker by removing less material.
The holes you have are a smaller version of the above but as said before be careful when walking around these areas, never walk into a small depression as it could have a false bottom covered with debris which could let go if walked on.
Hope this helps Cheers Mick
