hi all i would like to put a bit of punch plate at the start of my highbanker below the grizzly to let the black sands and fine stuff fall through and bigger stuff go onto the riffles and also make a cover for the first third of my river sluice like the new covers there selling in the states to do the same thing, had a bit of a look at my mates work shop and he has some 1mm, 4mm and 8mm just wondering if anyones has had a play around with this and knows the perfect size holes for the punch plate, i had a bit of a search thru the old posts but could not find much on it. cheers

I take it where talken about thickness ;D =8mm ;D My concern with the idea, would be sticky clay attaching and carting of the heavy's/or//..>>?!? it could work in yu favor and help brake up the clay or Trial an error best of luck FJ

I have no proof but i believe that having the punch plate stops clay making it to where your gold is and stealing it or less likely to make it back out if it does. I also think it does aid slightly in breaking up clay as it gets raked over it but there is normally not enough length to do a great deal.

Hi FJ, I have punch plate (10mm) in the hopper only because it was clogging up the V rubber(vhich is also in the hopper) and also helps to break the clay , Now I believe V rubber was put in so you could get an Idea how much gold you’re getting per shovel or per bucket which works great for me. Also slows the water flow.

hi guys thanks for the quick reply's shivan..do you notice any difference between the 6mm and 4mm? someday...some aren't as thick as others ;D ;D (hope you get the same adds as we do or that just won't make sense) i was hoping it would keep any clay and bigger rocks off the heavy's by going on top of the punch plate and there will be a small gap under the punch plate between it and the v mat Joe...i also have some v mat for the hopper and some to go under the punch plate under the grizzly so it sounds like I'm thinking along the right track just a matter of finding the most suitable size holes...I'm thinking 6 mm unless shivan noticed the 4mm was better. thanks fellas cheers

Hi FJ.
My big highbanker has 6mm punch plate and works very well. Most of the fine Oallen gold is found on the V matting underneath it. The smaller HB has 10mm holes and I don't think it works any near as good. Not sure about it helping to breaking up clay, any clay is well and truly blown apart in the hopper.

FJ have not had a chance to run the new HB yet as iam still waiting for the top hopper but will let you know if there is much difference. In our old setup with riffles and miners moss we had tryed just v matting uder the hopper and noticed a big difference when we added the punch plate, though we only ran 2 weekends without it.

;D what adds ;D
if I'm understandies properly, then go with the 1mm thick plate with 6mm holes and about 10mm above the matting, cause me think 1mm holes a we bit small! and make sure there round hole's cause square holes are a pain for cloggen up ;D

welcome FJ, forgot to mention with my new addition of gold hog mats I've taken out the punch plate bottom sluice below the grizzly because it interfered with the flow.

G'day FJ i'm going to be the odd one out here i use 5mm punch plate have been for 18yrs. i sluice for fine gold most of the time . i have a 12mm gap between punch plate and mat. i find punch plate does not do much in breaking up clay, my hopper does all the breaking up of clay ect witch has 12mm holes in bottom. if working nugget ground i place one riffle in front of punch plate about 50mm because i use expanded mess on top of matting all the way down the box. cheers lonewolf.

good to know lonewolf, if i can't get 6mm now i know 5mm will do ..thanks joe i will be putting the gold hog mats (when i get my money from the keene mats back) in an extension sluice instead of my high banker so the plate will be staying in the banker thanks for the tip though cheers guys

FJ if you are going to use hog mats in the extension you would be better off with the razorback mat as it is suppose to be better for a medium speed water flow, will know more when my new mats turn up. the scrubber and the ur need higher water speed to make them active. Cheers Skip
