Hi, I am 13 and new to alluvial gold finding. I own a Garrett Ace 250 and but also would like to get into panning. I do not have a big budget and would like some idea's on where to get a pan for a reasonable price. My panning skills are pretty average and would like to master them before i get to buying a sluice box etc. If anyone could help me on where to find a good gold pan it would be much appreciated. Thanks

G'day goldwhale and welcome to the forum. There are alot of pans on the market and just about all of them will do the job. For someone starting out i dont think you can go past the garret super sluice pan. It has huge riffles in it to make loosing gold hard and also has a big dish. Most prospecting shops stock this pan.

Hi Goldwhale, You could try gun or camping and fishing stores/ army disposal's if there still around?
Shivan's suggestion is a very good pan, not just for novice's either, I use one all the time! Youtube the backwash method, but don't read too much into it, Just start practicing and let the water and material tell the story! Observation and patients is the key!
Have fun.

Hi Goldwhale and welcome to the forum.
There are plenty of knowledgeable people on here so if you have any questions, just ask away.
Depending on where you are in Sydney there are a few places to buy a gold pan from. The best selection of equipment will be at the Miners Den on Church St Nth Parramatta and you will also get the proper advice there, but you can buy a gold pan from most outdoors stores such as BBQ's Galore, Rays Outdoors. etc
To get started there is no need to buy a top of the line pan. A 14" black plastic pan will not cost you much and is as good as anything to learn with. When selecting a pan make sure you get one with a large flat base area.(Have a look at the Garret super sluice pan and you will know what I'm talking about). Some pans have a really small base area of only around 150mm diameter and they are pretty useless.
If you are anywhere near Campbelltown I would be happy to give you one to get started
Cheers Ric
