Up north in Australia where there ain’t no snow,
Away up where the big gums grow,
There lived a little termite who loved to chew,
And he was the founder of the didjeridu.
Tommy, the termite, he knew a country grand,
Tommy, the termite, who came from Arnhem Land.
The trees grew strong and their limbs were straight,
Tommy was hungry, he chewed and he ate-
He hollowed out a branch and he never broke through,
And that’s how we came by the didjeridu.
Tommy, the termite, he never heard a band,
Yet Tommy, the termite, gave songs to Arnhem Land.
The lightning flashed, it thundered all around,
And that great big tree crashed to the ground-
Piccaninnies found a branch, they puffed and they blew,
And out came the music of the didjeridu.
Tommy, the termite oh, now I understand,
Why Tommy, the termite, is loved in Arnhem Land.
Now Tommy fell in love and he made many sons,
He raised ‘em all on trees and they ate many tons-
For thousands of years they bred and they grew,
Every generation making many didjeridu.
Tommy, the termite, he lived on the northern sand,
Tommy, the termite, is king of Arnhem Land.
It happened years ago on a night so very dark,
Old Tommy passed away ‘neath a little piece of bark-
Aborigines cried when they came to hear the news,
And they sung him up to heaven with their didjeridus.
Tommy, the termite, to you we give a hand,
The ghost of old Tommy is haunting Arnhem Land.
