G'day, I'm in Canberra and love fossicking, I would call myself curious to the methods of seperating gold from dirt, and always working on designing new fosicking tools that are light but hard wearing, and can be easily built from off the shelf hardware supplies. My biggest problem is I'm time poor and don't get to the Rivers as often as I would like, I'm hopig to change that this year.

Hey Nifty, I'm also in Canberra, Woden area..usually out every weekend panning/detecting and would also like to have a 'panning mate' Happy to share some spots with you and be interested to swap ideas regarding tools. I'm currently trying to make a clay shovel and a clay cutter. Got a special spot where the gold is stuck in columns of hard green clay and to add to the fun its 5 foot under water so I need some special tools. Anyway drop me a PM if your interested. Cheers

Hi. I am from Canberra as well and was wandering where do you go detecting locally. Canberra is a very closed area. Rich Hi Rich I dont know of any spots within the ACT to go gold fossicking. There maybe some but I haven't heard of any. So only option is to hop across the border. Driving east on the Kings Hwy the Shoalhaven River is a good place to start, under the Warri Bridge there are spots there worth trying. Further down stream you have Oallen and thats popular. Upstream from Warri you have Bombay which is quite interesting. Lots of activity went on there in the ancient river bed which is high up on the western side. Going further up stream again there are some decent spots also. Up and down the Shoalhaven you'll find gold, not a lot but enough to keep you happy. Going south on the Monaro Hwy Cowra creek. Its a barren, dry place and quite frankly it gives me the creeps. Its a rocky fire trial into there and the mobile coverage is bad to non existant. Best to tackle if you have a 4x4 or 4x2 with good ground clearance. Lot of mining went on there in the old days. West of Canberra I have heard there is some areas in and around the Goodrabidgee River that may still hold gold. Going north to Dalton (via Gunning) and Tuena (via Croookwell) are both within reach for day tripping. Interesting place Tuena and another spot wheres there is no mobile coverage. All in all there are some good spots to trying all within and 1-2 from Canberra. I recently found a spot on the Molonglo out of Queanbeyan but I haven't found anything there yet.. but I'm working on it. My guess is there are plenty of other good spots a few hours within reach from Canberra, but those are the main ones that I know of. Regarding the detecting side, for gold nuggets the news is not so good. I know some areas that may still hold nuggets but I haven't found any with my detector yet. I have found old coins though. Hope that gives you some ideas. Cheers Jim
