Hi all, my name is Paul and though I live in southern Sydney I have a small property about 10kms south of Oberon which is used as a weekender. I get to Oberon for a few days every 2 or 3 weeks but don't know squat about gold prospecting though I believe there are supposed to be some fair/good locations around Oberon. As I have owned the Oberon property for more than 10 years I have met, and become friends with, many of the locals so I am hoping to be able to get access to some private land if necessary. I visited Hill End a few years ago with my brother and his kids as his daughter was doing a school project on gold and he had decided to take her to see the "real thing'! We bought a couple of gold pans for the kids to try out their skills and the pans are still sitting in my shed so I think I might knock up a sluice from bits and pieces and try my hand at gold prospecting. Any Oberonarians (if that's what a person from Oberon is called?) who might be doing some prospecting could let me know and maybe I could give them a hand and learn something at the same time. Thanks Paul

Hi paul. Oberon is a mixed bag of goods. Gold, diamonds, sapphires and if you head east theres silver. Just head to little river fossicking reserve, native dog creek, campbells river causeway. . But youll need a fossicking license witch you can get in bathurst. Good luck.

if your in oberon then sapphires are a big thing there...gold as well but i found a ton of sapphires at ....sapphire corner i think its called....drive down the forestry road and basically pull off and there are holes everywhere....people reckon its flogged to death but the wife and i pulled over 100 carats of sapphires from one little hole...literally was pulling 1-2 carat sapphires straight outta the ground....there were lots of little ones but we did manage about 5 cutters in total....it is a messy game though so be aware!

Thanks people, Sapphire Bend is the common place to do sapphire prospecting but as carms said there are holes everywhere. Sapphire Bend is a couple of kms south of my property so I might try there. Thanks phish I am aware that Native Dog Creek and the Campbells River are good for gold but I have also heard that Sewells Creek is good. I also read that O'Connell has some fairly good gold prospecting areas. Anyone who wants a "helper" send me a PM. Cheers Paul
