Hi everyone. Been interested in doing some prospecting for a while. I bought myself a garrett ADS1 as my first detector as I didn't want to spend a fortune for a new one. I live in the Canberra region but have access to about 500 acres 15 minuts southeast of my hometown Parkes. It's near a village called cookamidgera. My freind tells me there are old mine shafts up there but I can't seem to find any maps or information about that spot itself. My question is has anyone heard of any findings at cookamidgera and its surrounding areas? Or am I waisting my time? I also have access to properties around bogan gate area. Thanks

Welcome mate. There are many on the forum who are skilled or specialize in different prospecting areas such as metal detecting, sluicing etc. I am sure someone will touch base with you. It is always worth giving an area a go particularly if there were also alluvial workings in the area. The mines may be entrances to older alluvial's on ancient river beds further down the shaft as opposed to hard rock mining. Only you will find out but it is not advisable to go down these shafts and also tread with care around them especially with a lot of leaf litter as leaves and other tree matter can cover other hidden entrances such as pop holes used by old miners to determine the extent of a deposit rather than them to keep tunnelling etc. Such holes saved a lot of hard work. Try acquiring a metallogenic map from Mineral Resources (different name now). This will give you more clues as to the type of mining and minerals. donny
