Hi Andy. My name is Kent i'm a new member just getting into prospecting after moving to Victoria. In a previous thread you mentioned that it's is not allowed to pan in the pool below the woodshed falls near Beechworth. I wanted to ask why this is? And also why not to drink the water?

G'day Kent. Welcome to the forum.
The pool below Woolshed Falls is part of the classified historic site in that area & is in the Beechworth Historic Park. Included in that same historic site are the Falls themselves, the area at the top of the falls & all of that creek that runs from Chiltern Rd direction into the top of the falls.
The other creek that comes in near the top of the falls & flows under the first wooden bridge on McFeeters Rd, coming from Chiltern Rd, is Spring Creek. This starts at Lake Sambell out the back of Beechworth at the end of Junction Rd, & flows through town behind High St, then crosses High St just past the servo at the bottom end of town at the bridge heading towards Wangaratta, as it flows into The Gorge. Beechworth Historic Park is all that bushland you see behind the houses on the other side of the road from the servo.
Panning etc in the entire length of this creek is also prohibited, as it is also in the same historic site classification as the Falls.
You are allowed to start panning or sluicing downstream from the first left hand bend downstream from the pool at the bottom of the falls.
The creek water is polluted with many toxins that were used in the 1800's/early1900's & also gets the run off from when the sewage ponds on McFeeters Rd overflow after heavy rains. The overflow runs straight into Spring Ck. Actually if you park near that first wooden bridge & walk a couple of hundred metres upstream, you'll see the overflow pipe sticking out of the outside bank of the ponds.
Don't let what I just said above put you off. I lived/camped along the creek for 4 years. You can wash, swim, pan, sluice, or do anything else in the creek & you won't get sick. Just don't drink it, even after being boiled. I personally know 2 blokes who ended up in the hospital for weeks because they refused to believe that drinking that creek water was bad for you.
If you have a cut or scratch or something, it might fester, but that's easily fixed with some Dettol.
