It's a great reward being in the bush, no matter what you are doing. Listening to the Bellbirds or trying to get a glimpse of a layer bird, a Platypus ducking in and out of its watery burrow, or trying to find gold in a secluded creek What about the reward you are getting in the way of GOLD? Are any of you taking home "pay dirt"? an amount that would eventually cover the cost of your equipment? A curious Flying Scott.

Well I'm to lazy to lug pay dirt out in buckets or even concentrates so final clean up is in the creek. My total for last year was just shy of 4g. And for this year I'm in par with about .1g a trip far from paying off my equipment but certainly enjoying the hours of detachment from the rest of the world in the creeks.

I find the biggest reward is being out there, so much so I spend the first day looking over my shoulder waiting for the gold police or some other authority, to come and ban the fun I am having. As far as the hunting for the gold, because of the nature of how it moves and what it dose, is a challenge to building things to catch it, I am way off the amount I thought I would find, and would stave to death on my finds, but that is the least concern. My non fossicking friends think I am crazy, seems all you folk on the forum are the only ones that under stand the endeavour. As far as being lazy, 360search,I don't know what your doing, but it knocks the stuffing out of me, and after a day in the creek, I have no trouble sleeping for the night, and don't feel the need to join a gym for exercise, that is for sure. It must have been hard going back in the horse and cart days.

Its been a while since I have brought home any pay dirt in a bucket. Only usually done this if it was a rich deposit , late in the day and in a really obvious spot that someone else could jump on. Yeah getting out there is a reward. Gold or not, its a nice day out. Picnic lunch and in the bush...digging as hard or as easy as you choose. If I had a dollar for every person whom asked "are ya rich yet?.." then yeah, I would be buying equipment straight from Miners Den. As is - I build my stuff from mostly scrap and recycling which is enjoyable and fills in the colder months. This years total came to just over 10 grams so am in front with all the small bits and pieces I had to buy.

We may look for gold and gemstones until we lose our marbles Flying Scott I've already lost my marbles! And the search to find like minded people in the game of natures lucky dip is endless without technology I rarely come accross others in the creek unless i plan to meet them there

I love the enjoyment of going out in the fresh air and just breathing in all of that luscious goodness. I love panning and have a few trips planned over the coming months so will update on progress of finds when I get there. All up I have spent a little over $500 for equipment and a couple of hundred dollars of fuel. But I have faith in my ability to manifest large amounts of the Golden Cheddar. Happy Golding everyone. Oh btw Mushmouse you'll have to take me for a look at where to prospect for diamonds.

Oh btw Mushmouse you'll have to take me for a look at where to prospect for diamonds. Funnily enough, I actually did find a diamond many years ago where you had camped. It was in the bottom of my pan and sparkled a treat. It was a diamond lost out someones ring or jewellery. Good to know the real deal makes its way to bottom with the gold & tin. I'm not sure I would know what a raw diamoned looks like if I came across one, but I always keep all my bigger gems when cleaning up. Historically they got a few around Beechworth. They got about 60 smaller ones in the Woolshed area. The largest recorded at the time was 2 and a half carats. The ones they did get were stated as being found in 'ordinary' washdirt. I believe that still to this day dont know the origin of them or where their source is. Wouldn't that be awesome to find
