G'day folks. I've just started panning, though I did buy a pan some 35 years ago, and for the last 35 years its been used a as bird bath ! Bought a new pan 2 weeks ago, and have done two trips up Omeo way (I have a shack at Cassilis, an old gold mining ghost town near Omeo), and on last trip last weekend I got myself a beautiful little nugget. When I say little, I mean tiny ! Under the loupe, its a beauty, but with my 56 year old eyes, its hard to see without a lens between me and it ! Anyway, its a confidence booster, and I think I've now got onset gold fever. Looking forward to sharing my stories with you all (e.g. the inevitable snake encounter), and reading stuff from all the other forum members.

G'day Cassillis & welcome to the forum. There's also nice gold in that creek that runs parallel to Gunningham Rd at Crossover. Good to see you out having a go.

Thanks Andy, I was talking to a bloke in Warragul yesterday and he said he does panning too, around the Beard's Track area. I've explored the Neerim East State Forest a fair bit and have come across numerous diggings, mullock heaps, etc. Came across a bottle dump in the sides of a dry creek, the bottles being buried from above but exposed in the bank sides, so obviously quite old. Also came across a big old boiler too lying in the scrub. Anyway, its great to be a member of this forum...

Hi Cassilis, a shack up there is worth 2 birds in your...um ....gold pan....? Nice area for your hobby and heaps of history. Was up that way last Christmas and had a great time chasing fluggets. Keyed up to go back there this year. Welcome to forum.

G'day Sluicer...thanks for the welcome. Had the Cassilis block since '98, 'camping' in a colorbond shed for most of that time, but spent last 5 years building a proper little shack (less draughts, fewer flies !), so now that that's finished I figured I needed to do something else up there, and panning just seems to be a no-brainer for that region. Stay in touch whenever you head up there again.

Hi Cassilis, You are in a good spot indeed, I hope you do keep in touch with the adventures you have, my father went to school in Neerim south, and some of the family buried in the Warragul cemetery. They had a dairy over that way. I have seen some finds that Mushmouse posted from there trip last year, very nice. Hope you have a great time and lots of gold Lab

Thanks Lab, much appreciated. The Neerim district certainly does have a history of gold prospecting in the 19th century, and even well into the 20th. I've been down a track to the Latrobe River where the chinese apparently diverted the river to get to the gold there. Quite an effort when you see what they did to create a new path through rock walls. If I ever get down there again (need a good 4WD to do it - its very steep), I'll take a photo or two and post 'em on the forum. Following bushfires in the Neerim East State forest a few years ago (2003 ? I think), I and some mates went detecting, as the fires opened up the scrub. Found lots of rubbish (.22 shells, old '70's ring pulls, that sorta thing) but nothing of value. But because it was all opened we could see loads of trenches, diggings, mullock heaps. Anyway, I'll do as you say - I'll keep posting as I keep panning and exploring, here and up Omeo way. Stay well...

Thanks Jeff. I agree. Left Melbourne in late '99, bought 17 acres and moved 4 kids and the wife into a whole new lifestyle. Going for gold is a great way to experience the bush - finding gold is a bonus, just trying is the reward.

Hi 360search. Found another little nugget in my Omeo spot. Very small - same size as my first. They may be small, but they're gold. Am enjoying my new hobby, esp. with Summer coming. Stay in touch re. a local joint effort.

Spot on Nuggethill, and thanks for the welcome. Its the thrill of finding any gold, regardless of size. Back to my spot again this weekend, hopefully I'll find another one. The missus is coming along too this time - I think she's showing early signs of gold fever ! I'll post an update next week...
