Hi, my wife and are over from Scotland and I thought it would be great to have a go at gold panning. We have done some before in Helmsdale, Scotland. I would like some ideas for around Batlow as were are staying with friends there. Thanks Stuart

Welcome to the forum Stuart. If you are staying in Batlow NSW, i would think Tumut and Tumbarumba may be areas to look into. I will try and find a bit more info for you as i have not been out that way myself.

Hello and welcome Stuart!
It may be a bit of a drive for you, but Oallen Ford is over on the other side of Canberra from you and is a spot I personally have gotten gold from. You can see pics I've posted on the other forums of what it looks like. Lots of people every day/weekend out there panning away. Good luck!

Hi JR, thanks for the idea. Our plans are to travel up from Narooma to the Blue Mountains after the New Year. Looking at google maps Oallon Ford might be a good stopping point for a few hrs. Could you give me a good location on the river please. Thanks Stuart

Stuart..
Sure, with the new bridge you can only exit on the west side now. Go down under the bridge. You should be able to find gold with a few test pans from the bridge all the way around the river bend until you hit the large sand bar across the river to the southeast. You want to check at the river's edge on the inside. It's a popular spot, so it's more of finding a place someone else isn't already working.

Hi Shivan with the advice from LordJR we will go to Oallen on the 2nd January. To have a go with a high banker would be a lot of fun. No idea how to use it but the videos suggest rock plus water goes in and gold just appears:)

What an amazing amount of history there is on these early gold fields. The old hand written maps which have been posted are great to see. I have spent the past few weeks reading up and looking forward to giving it a go, hopefully getting some local advice to keep me right. We will have a look at Adelong / Batlow at the end of next week then head up to Oallen for January.
