Hi all, sorry I have been a bit quiet on the front. I am in the process of getting NBN. Apparently when they port your phone number over you may be one of the lucky ones whom the techs decide to ignore your 20 year landline number and just pull one from a bingo barrel or something...dunno...So no ADSL...No Fibre...No landline and no idea when they will decide to punch in the correct number. Anyways keep on Golding.

I'm about to have mine connected.
I am going with my internet provider "iinet" as I have never had a single problem with them from the time I signed on when they were Ozemail in 2002. Only recall one time with no service and that was because some clown dug up a major cable in the city. Not iinet's fault.
Telstra have given me too much grief over the years and even this month tried to sway me into getting NBN connected by them until I found out I would also have to have my internet with them. They did not make any effort to explain this to me nor did they advise me of what plans were available or anything else for that matter.
Today I chose a plan with iinet and the staff, all of whom are in Australia BTW were very helpful. They also got my Telstra account details so I will retain my existing phone number.
My advice is read a lot, Talk to your existing internet provider if not telstra or bigpond and ask questions, find out what plans are available and if they include all phone calls or not. Don't let Telstra push you into the change over without properly advising you.
My plan I have signed to gives unlimited data and download speeds up to 25mbps which is plenty for what we use the internet and includes all local, national and Aussie mobile calls and I get the modem for free all for $89.00/month which is heaps better than any of the telstra deals I could see.
Do Not Cancel your existing Telstra service until your new service is up and running otherwise you may not be able to keep your existing number

We were the first town to be connected to the NBN, we are with Telstra and it has been a night mare, we are just getting use to living the way we did before internet, it is down with no signal more often than it is on. I miss seeing all the gold Mushmouse is finding, and what Golddiggerart's latest adventure is, and how deep the hole in his backyard is by now. From the stone age. Lab

Still off the grid. It's currently under NBN Co's investigation at this stage so just a waiting game. I have been with the same ISP provider since dial up days and have had a good run (Exetel). They did their bit at their end, it's NBN company that need to fix the issue and then they communicate with my ISP whom then talk to me. As Ric says - shop around for a good deal as Telstra can be expensive. The only downside is, if there is an issue then Telstra NBN customers could get priority over those who have chosen a 3rd party ISP and issue resolution is a lot quicker. I could not of foreseen this issue but I guess I am fortunate that I don't have a home business as this could literally send someone broke...

My town is surrounded by other towns that have the NBN, but my town is not getting it. Well not in the foreseeable future. Could be 6 or 7 years before we get it, if we get it at all. But from what I've been told by others who do have it, & have nothing but problems with it, I don't want it to come here.

WOW, Only placed the order for NBN last Wednesday, Modem arrived by courier on Friday and I am all connected and up and running today,in less than 5 working days. Phone will be another day or two while my existing number is moved over from Telstra to iinet. No More Telstra Hoo Bloody Ray The young "Aussie" bloke I spoke to on the phone from iinet talked me through the set up and we could both understand each other clearly Twenty Five minutes later I'm connected and speed is so much better than my old ADSL2 Cheers Ric

Good to hear Ric. Yep - that is a smooth service transition. I had to chase it up again today and was told it will be the 3rd of April before a tech ambles down to my nearest node and connects the right line. I've only been waiting for 3 weeks so best not be impatient hey.. . I hear ya Andy - cos once that line order is lodged there is no going back to adsl and you're at the mercy of any stuff ups + higher costs from overdraw on the mobile data quota. There will be some rebates or refunds in order by sure...

Too right Aussie. Well the tech did visit the pillar to hook me up at 8am early this week.No NBN for me...But next door got patched by 8.15. Yep. Seems like the copper wires are crossed. Not a problem with the old infrastructure linkage but put Fibre into the mix and these problems are going to rear up everywhere. Might just be easier to throw a cat 5 and RJ11 line over the fence and be done with it. So anyway - still offline and phone less

Not good at all Mushmouse. How the hell can they cross a pair now. If your old existing phone was working then there was certainly NO crossed pairs. It sound like they have crossed the pair while jumpering through the street pillars to the NBN node.
Just glad I dumped Telstra.
BTW my NBN phone connection was brought across from Telstra to iinet and was up and running the day after the NBN was connected. Everything is working great. I have however heard some nightmare stories from other locals who are with Telstra & Bigpond.
