I have an old Garrett detector! I also go everywhere with a pan! I know of what I term 'a few sweet spots' in very popular and often visited areas? I visit them often, unless there has been a recent flood, and I am not too late (before anyone else beats me there) I can find the occasional small nuggets with my detector. I classify a nugget as anything that make you aware of its density when dropped into your hand from 100mm away. So they are not necessarily big or large? Now this is what concerns me - doesn't anyone use or possess a pan nowadays? Because no matter when I attend these sites, I can always find a couple of small nuggets and an unlimited supply of what I term flakes. Get your pans out, they are more sensitive and reliable that any detector; and don't move far before another find, I can spend a full day, continuously gathering small flakes, then suddenly a small nugget; all within 10 metre or so. I recommend the possession of a pan anytime you step onto a gold bearing area

That's sound advice Allan as when I used to go panning in NSW I always came home with at least a few specks. I just wish I could say the same when I go detecting although the detected bits always seem to be a bit bigger and one find can make up for a few panning/sluicing sessions. Having said that if I had spent the same amount of time sluicing as I have detecting I would have found more gold sluicing. Rowdy

I never leave home without one. You just never know. I have found gold in some unexpected places. A creek culvert on the side of a main road near Goulburn NSW whilst waiting for one of our camping group to arrive at the rendezvous spot. Only a few specks but it gave me something to do for 2 hours.

Very good advise allan.
I always try to keep a spare pan in the car for just that reason rustyau. It can be very interesting finding something (even if small) in an area not expected.

Funny you should post this at this time Allan. I was out with my pans just this past weekend, & found a few bits in a dry creek bed. Not very big but enough to want me to explore it more.
